1991 Toyota Land Cruiser HZJ77

HIGHLIGHTS: 70 series in the USA, 5spd manual, front and rear locking differentials, turbo diesel, CA title and registration and pre-97 no CA smog required.

This is a real 70 series heavy duty Land Cruiser from Japan not a light duty Prado. These are the trucks sold throughout Australia. Africa and the developing world because they are simple and tough as hell. The 77 feels modern but industrial and utilitarian, with a metal dash, flat door panels, etc... However, it can cruiser at highway speeds without problem, and being a VX it has the creature comforts we've come to expect in modern SUVs such as PS,PW, PL,PB, AC, electric moonroof, power lumbar support in driver seat, etc...

This is a very desirable 70 series with, what I would argue to be, the three most sought after options: 1. an H55, 5spd manual transmission, 2. a 1HZ 4.2 liter six cylinder diesel engine and lastly 3. front and rear locking differentials.

The truck has also been upgraded with a full 1HDT turbo setup. The 1HDT is most often found in the HDJ81 and HDJ80 and is for all intensive purposes a 1HZ with a turbo. This truck has a 1HDT turbo, intake, crossover pipe, etc...installed in Japan, all the Toyota turbo components that would be found on a 1HDT. You therefore basically have a 1HDT powered 70 series. If you've driven a standard 1HZ and a 1HDT, you know the difference is night and day but with the 1HDT and its added power you still get the incredible Toyota reliability.

This truck has also been upgraded with an Old Man Emu 2" lift with medium Dakar leafs, Cusco oil catch can, front hubs changed to manual locking hubs, Ironman front bumper, no-name nerf bars, Front Runner full length roof rack, and five new 16x8 wheels with 255/85r16 Cooper Discoverer ST Max tires.

The truck has 370k kilometers so 230k miles and the timing belt was changed at 300k kilometers. Service under my ownership has included two new Interstate batteries, oil changes and other fluid services but it has not required any significant repairs. I also replaced some interior items with original Toyota parts including the steering wheel, shift knob, instrument surround, and inclinometer. And changed the stereo to a US unit that has the proper frequency band. The only thing left is to source a dash pad and the sliding moonroof cover is missing the soft padding on the inside as seen in the photos. Lastly, I will include a Dobinsons 70 series snorkel that was not installed.

The truck was legally imported from Japan in April of 2018 into Colorado. I purchased it in July of 2020 and titled and registered it in CA. Subsequently I went about a significant update and clean up. Most involved in the resto was removing the fender flares and cutting out rusted areas in the rear quarters and repainting the lower half of the truck. This was completed professionally by a shop in the Bay Area.

With all the upgrades, original equipment replacement, rust repair and new paint this is now one amazing rig. It gets tons of compliments and attention wherever its driven. It's not a garage queen/show rig, it's meant to be used, scratched, beaten and taken places most other rigs just wont go. You can jump in and drive this thing anywhere in the world without concern for its durability, dependability or lack of comfort.

I have owned a handful of JDM and AUS domestic market trucks over the last ten years. Once titled and registered in CA I've never had any issues with registration renewal nor transferring said vehicles to a new owner in CA. I'm hoping someone in CA will take advantage of this opportunituy and keep this Land Cruiser 70 series in CA.

I have four Land Cruisers an FZJ80, HDJ81, FJ45 troopy and this HZJ77. I love these things but I can't keep them all so the 77 is for sale.

the sans fender extension look is growing on me along with the paint job.

mud flaps would be a great addition

Awesome rig, and well done with the restoration/mods you've completed. Seems reasonably priced for everything you've done. I'm not in the market yet, but if I was, I would be all over this. GLWS!
