Any decent uses for this device? The wife got one from a family member but we already have ipads and iphones so not familiar with these.

Can they be used as a head unit for music/movies or maybe offroad gps etc?

Thanks for any info/help!

Buy a OBD II Bluetooth dongle and the Torque app for your tablet and you'll be able to monitor everything from current gas mileage, average MPG, voltage, temperatures, tilt and yaw, and much more! If your rig throws a "Check Engine" light, it will also tell you what the code is.
The OBD II was about $25.00 bucks on eBay and the app by Torque is $5.00 bucks. The best investment I've ever made for my (Galaxy S4) phone and rig.
If you have an audio out on your head unit, you can plug in your device and use it as a jukebox.

Motion X GPS is good to use to download offline maps. I use it if we are wheeling with no service. It'd be nice to have a larger screen for more real estate so the Tab might be a good idea to use for maps

I'm working on integrating my iPad, with spotify, audible, maps, obd2, etc feeding in through the head unit via Bluetooth. Mounting the iPad in an otter box, with attached rare earth magnets hidden behind the center console. Check out youtube for some terrific ideas.

Unfortunately Android is not supported.

Backcountry navigator - great app, but you do have to pay for it.

I hated MotionX when it first came out but the ability to download Google topos sets it apart. Finding an easy to read map on a small screen in a moving truck is a hard thing. MX seems to nail this better than the others.

Does this work with iPhone as well? Sounds cool!

Have you tired backcountry? That is the reason I mentioned it, you can download maps for where you plan to go and then access them offline.

I have, but I don't believe you can download Google Topo maps? Maybe I just didn't dig into it deep enough. MotionX appears to be the only one with that feature and unfortunately is iOS only. The other offline maps I've seen appear to be high res scans which don't scale well as you zoom in/out nor do they rotate well (text is upside down).

For those interested in the MotionX potential, here's Rob's excellent write up:

YOu can download a bunch of different maps from different sources, google, USGS, accuterra, US forest service, etc.

What settings are you using for google maps? I had tried the same URL as in Rob's TLCFaq and it wouldn't pull in any maps.

Here's what I have:

To be very honest, I really don't know. You'll have to go through the Apple Apps store and see if Torque is available. Originally it was not, but for some reason (may have heard somewhere), I think it may be now.

Does it work with the OBD2 dongles that work really well with Torque on Android? That'd be great if it did.

Again, this has to go out to all those Apple users out there. They need to chime in! I'm sure the OBD II vendor should be able to tell you what software will work and vice-verse, the Apple app should give a list of OBD II dongles also. If you get it off eBay, I don't always trust what eBay vendors say about their products.
You might consider checking out what is said about the Apple app. I love the Android Torque app, but I can't give any feedback on the Apple version.
