Hey all,

I've got a strange issue with my Saginaw power steering setup - not sure if this is normal/fixable behavior if if there is a bigger issue.

The steering runs fine 99% of the time, no whine, no belt squeal, etc. It's a new Cardone rebuilt pump (maybe 50-75mi on it so far). The box is also a Cardone rebuild with ~600mi.

1. I noticed last week that at full "lock" I would get a weird shudder in the steering. I figured I didn't have the belt tight enough, as it seemed kind of loose, so I tightened it up. I hadn't driven it since.

2. Yesterday, I backed out of my garage (which involves a sharp turn in reverse) and the truck immediately "flipped" the power steering belt upside down.

3. Since the above trashed the belt (wouldn't track in the pulley anymore) I replaced it. I still get the "shudder" sound at full lock to the left or right, and noticed that the pump's pulley STOPS at full lock. The Shudder is the belt as the crank keeps moving and the power steering pump locks up.

4. Upon Further investigation I've realized that this only occurs when I max out the turns in the power steering box (not hitting the steering stops at the knuckles). The issue is, the steering is strong enough that, once I hit the stops at the knuckles, I can push right through and shift the truck on its springs until the box bottoms out and locks up the pump with almost no effort.

Is this normal? If so, is there a way to prevent it? Do I just push out the steering stops farther (cutting down my turn radius) in an effort to force the box to stop "pushing" before it maxes out? It's a 4 1/4 turn box. Right now, I have it set to have 2 turns in both directions. The knuckle stops hit with about 1/8 turn left either direction. But as I mentioned, the steering is so powerful it just pushes the truck sideways that last 1/8 turn until the box hits its maximum.

Is there not a relief valve in the pump that's supposed to prevent pressure lock?

I think it's a bypass in the steering gear, that could be the issue, and not opening up when @ full locked position.

I have the same set up as you describe, but do not experience said pulley lock up at full lock...just a slight whine from the pump, but no squeal and no lock up... Very odd behavior there... Good luck!

This is what I'm accustomed to - I would expect there to be a hiss or whine as the fluid bypasses at high pressure, but this pump appears to be "locking" entirely.

I'm wondering if it could be an illusion: For example, perhaps the belt is too loose - so as the pump tries to slow down at high pressure, the belt keeps trying to move at full speed (run off the crank). As the belt then skips around the slower power steering pulley, it stops moving said pulley, thereby stopping the pump. Seems far fetched but stranger things have happened I suppose...

I'm just hesitant to tighten the belt up further again because last time I tried that it flipped the belt and trashed it.

There is a place in Texas that is really superb with knowledge of saginaw pumps and boxes...just can't remember their name right now..
West Texas something...I hear they are extremely knowledgeable about our Saginaw stuff....do a search and I bet you'll find them..
they rebuild and build some very powerful boxes and pumps!

Cheers!

Of course, there is Georg in Cali and Curt in SLC who are also expert in this stuff!! You have choices!! Good luck sir!

Well, I went out this morning and fired the truck up, and instead of locking up, it was now exhibiting the normal "loose belt" squeal, with no sign of the pump locking up as before. So I tightened the belt up. Now I get a minor "his" which may still be a minor squeal, or just the bypass valve opening. Either way, this seems to be resolved for now...although I thought this fixed it last time just before it chucked the belt. Time will tell!

Thanks for this - Yes, Gerog and Kurt have helped me out quite a bit in the past. And I will definitely keep West Texas offroad in mind in the future. Normally I cry for help from the public first, as I really only like to bother the pros if I've actually bought the parts from them. Seems unfair to take their time if I haven't paid them for it. 4-turn boxes are getting harder and harder to find, and I've had very mixed success with parts store rebuilds. If (when) this pump inevitably fails, I'll have to take a look at what WTOR can do for me.
