Hey there - Does anyone have the Surco safari roof rack? It's the basket style rack. Is this a quality brand. Does it matter? Are there certain one's better than others? Thanks! :meh:

I was so glad to sell my ARB rack - HEAVY in all the wrong places and a major wind drag to boot. With the mesh floor it was about a 2-3 mpg drop when installed even empty with noticeable noise. African Outback installed in its place is just about transparent, mpg, noise and power wise and even with the RTT installed, total weight is no more than the ARB rack by itself. I love ARB products but the rack is just too heavy on a 60 series, IMO.

I have a wilderness rack made by garvin and its pretty nice. It is the full length of the roof and is light for it size. I got it up on the truck by myself and just a little assistance from my father lining it up.

Does your African Outback have a solid floor? How far off the roof does it sit? Pics?

Slee - Roof Rack Details Christo has a bunch of pictures of the rack on my 62 that aren't posted on his website. I have the rack mounted low, about an inch off the roof at the lowest point, but it can be raised to accommodate the AO camp table.

I bought one used, and it's been great so far, held a couple hundred pounds strapped to it but that encompassed the entire length and was resting on top. (Not inside the basket). The cross bars inside the basket, not at the roof mounting points, may be a little too flexible if the weight you're carrying isn't distributed evenly.

But in all fairness, I have had zero issues with mine hitting the roof so far, and they make a spare tire carrier so the company believes it'll hold the weight.

It's extremely light, but in this case you lose a little strength to save the weight.

LOVE my Outback Rank from Slee.....light,well built, functional and good looking
