I am very sad about my Dog Nell an Irish Wolf Hound, today I had to have her put down an hour or so ago. I think that she may have developed an arrhythmic heat beat a short while ago but it was not very clear. A few weeks ago she suffered a twisted stomach which was operated on but definitely made things far worse as she started to develop periphery oedema and Right sided heart failure. We called the vet in the early hours of this morning as her condition worsened and she could not sit or lie down and we had to sit up with here and wait until lunch today when she was allowed to have some piece. She was a great dog and wonderful companion and will be very much missed.

Sorry man, that sucks- I love those big dogs.

Very sorry to hear this man, my thoughts are with you and with Nell. May she play in heaven with the other doggies until she is reunited with you (many years from now I hope). Again, my thoughts are with both of you.

I put my doggie to sleep about 2 months ago. It is a horrible feeling to lose a companion/best friend. I sitll grieve for her. A friend shared with me "Dog Heaven" by Cynthia Rylant. It is a nice picture book. Be gentle with yourself - it takes time. Not much else one can do. Sorry to hear it.

Sorry to hear about that. You have my sympathies.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. I feel for you sir, dogs truly are mans best friend.

Sorry to hear that, it's never easy to lose a member of the family, which it sounds like your dog was. It took me a while to get over my first dog . . . all I can say is that it takes time. At least you know that she isn't suffering any more. You have my sympathies, take care.

i am sorry to hear this -- wolfhounds are lovely pups -- i'm sure you'll eventually be able to celebrate the great life you gave her and she gave you -- it's just hard though --

Man, threads like these make me dread the day I have to put my dog to sleep. I can only imagine losing a great friend like you did. I'm sorry about the lose.

My heart and thoughts are with you. Sad occasion. Celebrate the good times and memories with Nell!

A heartache like no other.

I am sorry to hear of your loss GF.

I am glad to know that your pet had a loving, caring, responsible owner that would not allow her to unduly suffer.

I know you will always cherish the time you had together, and the joy that she brought to your life.

Alot of people on this forum have animals that they love very much...and I'll wager that more than a few... will be spending a little extra time with theirs because of your post here today.

Thanks JMM

I thank all of you for your very kind words. Loosing a dog is a body blow even though we know there lives are short lived. They are like children to us and are very dependant and yet also know our inner thoughts, they can really touch your soul like nothing else. This afternoon I buried here with here old play mate another Wolf hound who left this world two and a half years ago one Christmas Eave. Both of my dogs where rescued, and I feel contented that they were happier with us on our small holding than with there former owners. I feel that I am very comfortable on this board even though most of you are half a world away and as Dan has said separated by a common language. I have never put any thing up like this before but felt compelled to do so and I am glad that I have. If it does make any one a little closer to there dog then that is good.

I came very close this morning. My dog has not eaten in three days. This morning he couldn't get up. The kids said goodby to him and I carried him to the Cruiser. He was bright and aware and not in any noticable pain, but he was too weak to stand.

The x-rays came back very positive. No cancer. Normal arthritis. Normal hip problems. Srong heart and lungs.

They have him on an IV and anti-biotics now. It looks like he might make it. The blood work isn't back yet, so he still might not come home, but it looks a whole lot better than it did this morning.

My dogs are both rescues as well. Good on ya.

Losing a dog is a very tough thing. Tip a few draughts in his memory tonight.

I'm truly sorry for your loss. A "body blow" is right. Losing a dog is one of the toughest things that has ever happened to me. Be happy though, that you helped her out by bringing her into your house as a rescue and then helped her out by ending her suffering. I imagine tht she is pretty grateful to you for both.
Take care,

Curran

I read this quote in a book about dogs, I think it sums it up perfectly.

"In life the firmest friend, first to welcome, foremost to defend"

It did. Thanks.

Almost never in my life have I not had a dog. Currently I have 5. Try to think about the good times and not the end. You can only do what is right no matter how much it hurts.
