What is the best way to protect the undercarriage of my truck from rust formation and the spreading of existing rust. Should I get a coating or is there a better method. Living in the rust belt is tough this time of year when you are a Toyota lover.
Relocating the rig approx 1000 mi sw should do it!
The coatings can provide some protection to exposed areas, but can also act to trap moisture and corrosive material. Frequent washings will help the undercarriage, but probably won't help much with the body panel rust which typically starts from inaccessible areas behind the sheet metal.
The problem with oil is that it leaves a mess for few days while it drips off. POR is another option, do it yourself. Time consuming and not all that cheap. I think the most practical option is to use a body shop. Most body shops can do a job for you from cheap to more expensive - they can spray the hell out of the underside and more or less stop the rust. I've heard prices ranging from about $200 CDN up to 500++. There are a few other options; check the web and you'll find them.
