I called customer care yesterday to see if my 99 had any warranties. The woman I spoke with was interested in hearing about the areas on the frame with rust. Anyone with rusted swaybar mounts or crossmembers should open a case. The number is 1-800-331-4331

Interesting. I know some stuff is starting up about 4th gen 4runner rust. And I can attest the under coating on mine is garbage. Spent 15 years in Texas zero rust, One winter in Denver has knocked the paint off the frame in a lot of spots..... And I keep it clean when it's above freezing.

My LX has zero rust, is older, and driven more.

Would this qualify? Just replaced my rear sway bar bushings and most of the screws snapped, had to tap and drill...sucked. Noticed how bad the rear axle and surrounding area was, even the lower shock bolts area aren’t even recognizable, just a rust blob of where the bolt is...here’s a pic of the driver rear sway bushing area...

The reason I called is the fact that most of my frame still has factory paint on it. Certain areas are bad and need to be repaired. I would report anything that is a safety concern.

What did you tell her about your '99 and how interested was she?

She said they need to hear from us if we have problems so Toyota can decide whether or not to address them. Even though these are old vehicles, they are still replacing frames on tacomas and tundras due to corrosion in certain areas of the frame that pose a safety concern.

Don't think Toyota/Lexus would do much to the rust issue here. Guaranteed to sell you a new vehicle every 10-12 years. Good business model.

maybe they would address the boiling gas and brake failure issues???????? I'll call and report back.

Several other Toyota/Lexus vehicles had problems with their brake booster assemblies as well. Examples are Highlander, Prius and LS460. Toyota extended the warranty to 10 years / 150,000 miles. That would not help anyone here.

Mercedes had a similar problem with their electro-hydraulic brakes called SBC. Mercedes did the right thing and extended warranty to 25 years: Sensotronic Brake Control - Wikipedia

imo, they're never going to fix or address 100s frames. More Tacoma's and t4r's were sold in a month than a year of 100's and the 100's sales numbers dwindled quite a bit after the high of 01 or 02 iirc. The numbers just aren't there to even care, given the age. Most folks simply buy southern vehicles, the northern ones, well... stay in the north, where rust is often justified or acceptable or dealt with.

just spoke with them as well and shared my concern, and requested they look into adding the LC to the complaint vehicles along with the tundra, etc. My agent wasn't super helpful or interested, but at least my case is also documented! thanks for the info. Maybe if they get a few hundred calls, they'll think about it.

I did too, and shared some of the details of my experience with Crusty. I was assigned case 1904182051. I suggest we pool the case numbers. Just as an illustration, here is a photo of my son's hand and Crusty's frame rail:

Crusty is off the road and has served as a donor car for interior trim for my 1998. Sad tale.

The Toyota rep said there was no program currently for us, but would contact me if something changed. I pointed him at this forum (where my photos are), but did not point him to this specific topic. Might be a good idea to do that.

I have had 2 tacomas that were recalled, I was happy that Toyota stood behind their name and that is the reason I bought a 2016 gen 4 3 yrs ago. Yes less 100 series were sold, but at more than 2 times the cost. This is also Toyotas flagship vehicle and the claims they have made in ads are probably true other than salt corrosion. I am not looking for a handout on a 20 yr old vehicle. I think Toyota should be made aware of the issues we have. Make a call, the people on the other end of the customer care line are very pleasant. Toyota is a company that actually takes note of our issues. A recall or fix on our 100's sure would help sell more cruisers! My case # is 1904152500.

Most of my frame looks great. It is just a few areas that look bad, off the main frame. That was the concern with other toyotas. A maintained frame can still have areas that are bad. If the whole unserside is bad it was obviously exposed to a lot of water and salt.
