I had my '87 FJ60 smogged in CA and it passed but the tester said it was running very lean. I was told this makes for s hotter running motor which I don't care for so what is the easy fix if there is one? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

There is a good chance, if this truck is new to you, that the PO had leaner jets put into the carb so it will pass the smog test. I've talked to a guy at Man-A-Fre who said that's what they did with many, many trucks to get them to pass the CA smog test.

You might try adjusting the mixture screw on the pass side of the carb - just keep a count of how many turns you make and remember to reset it when it comes time to pass inspection again.

Running lean is too much air or not enough gas. Changing the jets in the carb could do it, but more likely you have a vacuum leak. The intake manifold, the carb base, cracked or disconnected vacuum hoses, leaking brake booster, are some common places for leaks. Plug a vac gauge into the intake manifold to help diagnose it. Spraying carb cleaner around gasketed joints works well too.
