So…. Just installed a 3" lift on my 87' 60… It has developed a low bass rumble in the upper rpm half of 3rd and almost all of 4th gear…. Seems like it's coming from up front, but it's hard to pin point due to the low frequency of the rumble…. Any thoughts….??? Purred like a kitten before the lift… Bought the Heavy Duty 3" inch from Spector…. Hmmmm???

thanks Guys…and Gals…

Might as well post a pic

Here she is….!!!

First guess- sticky u- joint. It doesn't like the new angle.

Nice rig!

Lift looks nice, but I think if you go more than 2 inches then it becomes a lot of work to get right

Shims Installed

I read up on the need for shims… Which my lift kit DID come with… However, I think the shop installed the shims incorrectly. They installed the fat end facing in on both axels… Shouldn't it be the other way around..?? Both front and rear differential are pointing up creating almost a straight line from each differential through each shaft…. To my minds eye that did nothing but INCREASE the angle difference at each joint…. The point is to get the difference to DECREASE… correct..?? I'm confused…..

You are correct, the shims are in backwards. The fat end of the shim should be toward the shackle... Bummer. I'd have them re-install.. at their expense of course.

thanks

Thanks for the shim confirmation. And yes, they will be paying for the reinstall… As for the ride…. I got the Heavy Duty kit from Spector as I'm looking for an ARB Bull BAr and winch… but it is a bit bouncy… Maybe that will settle down as I add more weight on the front and the back springs break in a bit….

cheers guys

On the rears it does not matter since there is no caster in the rear ideally in the rear you want to reduce the angle on the shaft....the front of course is a different situation you have to correct caster so the fat end points front.

thanks

So…. they switched out the shims today. the fat end facing the shackle…. And guess what….. NO VIBRATION…!!! It's amazing that a reputable 4x4 shop here in Venice Beach/Santa Monica got it wrong… And then when I returned to correct the problem doubted me to high holy hell…. The folks here on this forum proved correct, and gave me the knowledge to school the "Expert" Mechanic….. The concept is quite basic… which is what surprised me….

Thanks to everyone who helped…..

Glad it worked out. Curious to hear what the shop was thinking and if they will get it right going forward. Your truck looks great.
