All-
I am posting an update on my brother Josh Geiger who rolled his rig off v-rock on Cadillac Hill this last Friday. I don't know where else to post this update and so many people wanted to know how he was doing so if this is an inappropriate place someone please let me know where else to do this.

My brother is currently in Sacramento at a neotrauma unit. He has 4 broken ribs, a bleed in the brain, a broken scapula (right side), a crushed shoulder (left side), a flayed chest (crushed) which has caused his left lung to be consolidated so he has a catheter in his chest to drain the fluid and maintain pressure to keep the lung from collapsing. Because of the lung issue he is on a ventilator and is in a medically induced coma. He has 11 staples in his head and he has to be periodically paralyzed to keep from pulling out his tubes. He is currently in surgery to repair the shoulders.

I want to thank everyone who helped with my brothers rescue and the vehicle recovery. "Besty" is very important to him so her recovery is really important to his recovery. I would really like to thank my family and friends who were there including my husband who rushed up the mountain to a possibly fatal situation with know thought to there own safety. They just knew they had to get there! My mother and father want everyone to know how grateful they are for all the support from eveyone who didn't even know Josh. TLCA and the various clubs on hand handled everything very professionally and were very supportive. I want to thank the paramedics and EMTs who were there for Josh becasue I know that some of them ran up the mountain! His family and friends who were there also know that his rescue would not have gone as smoothly if it didn't happen on this particluar weekend - Toyotathon. We had no idea what a close knit family the Toyota clan is. We also recoginize that the Rubicon Trail is not something to be taken lightly and that all the proper precautions should be taken to ensure eveyones safety. Unfortunately an event like this makes you realize how important it is to have seatbelts (and wear them), a spotter, a radio, and an appropriate firstaid kit.

Josh really loved the Rubicon and is determined to return next year even if he can't drive himself. It's amazing that he wants to return at all given that the weekend began and ended horrible - on Thursday he sank his rig in a VERY DEEP water crossing requiring him to completely drain the engine of oil and replace it. Later that night he burned his shoes in the fire, broke the hub on his rig and twisted his ankle. Then on Friday in repairing the hub he broke several of his tools and some tools that he borrowed. However through it all he smiled and was determined to have a good time. He would give you the shirt off his back and had a wicked sense of humor.

My brother was most likely not wearing his seatbelt which lead to the severity of his current situation. However I want eveyone to know that alcohol did not play a part in the accident. He had drank the night before, like most eveyone in camp, and got up the next morning to replace his hub because he was due at the staging area at 2:00PM to pick up his friend. There was no ice chest in his rig and he didn't drink anything in camp that morning. His blood alcohol level at the hospital after he was admitted was ZERO. I think that people automatically jumped to the conclusion that alcohol was involved because it's easier to say that a severe accident happens from alcohol rather than thinking that it could happen to anyone. He also did not have a spotter or a good CB to transmit out for help.

If anyone has photographs of the rescue or vehicle recovery I would really like to have copies. I can be contacted at (707) 887-0888. Thanks.

having been actively involved in cruise moab for years and having two airlifts to hospitals in the last two years, alcohol would be the last thing i would think off in a cruiser ohv situation. i think, for the most part, that we have some very responsible people (neither of ours were drinking either...just accidents...they happen).

i hope more than you could believe that he is ok and am glad that he's ready to "get back on the horse". this, bill morgan's moab incident last year, and mercedes' (from the proffitt's crew) incident at moab this year are all proof that our enjoyment can be dangerous. but so can crossing the street downtown. i'd rather risk my life in the great outdoors and hope i can bravely get back on the horse when i screw up.

I have some photo's of the roll after Josh was loaded into the rig that drove him down to the heli-pad....PM me your direct email address and I'll send them to you....I think I speak for all when I say our thoughts and prayers are with you all

Please keep us informed on his progress, I am glad to hear he was not drinking. When I was on scene with your brother, someone mentioned he had been drinking before he went up Cadillac... glad to hear it was a bad rumor.

I know one thing for sure, the rollcage and fate saved his life. If he had been one foot to the left of that tree his wheel would not have hooked the tree and he would have rolled down the mountain.

Our thoughts and prayers will be with Josh, we hope all goes well with his recovery.

Regards,
Fman
