maybe the dumbest question so far on this topic, but I got a rat bastard of a schedule at work and almost no vacation days, so is it okay that I drive in on the trail from Tahoe just to visit everybody Thursday and Friday and leave Saturday morning? I havent seen some folks in a while and I dont want to wait until S&T. Rubithon has always been like a dream for me. I do not plan to run any organized runs etc. Or will sections of the trail be closed by TLCA staff? Just let me know, because I dont want to make people mad :) I will prolly come in Thursday afternoon/evening and stay Friday, then cut out early Saturday morning. I will also make myself available to help with rigs, recovery etc. Or if people need things to be picked up Thursday and brought in for them in return for letting me just visit If anybody interested in going in with me Thursday afternoon 4pm or 5pm - ish. Feel free to PM me. I may have an extra seat too for the ride in.

Per Tony's note above... The only way to camp at the Springs is to register for the event.

I dont have to camp at the springs. I will make do. I just dont want to miss the event and want to meet the folks. I will be as flexible and helpful as possible. I will give you guys an update next week. But if I come, I will bring as much ice as I can load up.

Mickey...

Yes, you can enter Thursday via Tahoe side, hang out, have fun, mingle, etc... and leave when ever you want.

but you still need to register. You can register at Rubicon Springs during the event.

I hope you can make it, despite your crazy schedule...

Paying the Registration

I offer the following comment to everyone... who is thinking or trying to avoid paying Rubithon registration.

when it comes to registering... remember this fact... this is a TLCA event, put on specifically for TLCA members, by TLCA members. If you dodge the registration, you are effectively hurting all your fellow TLCA members, and the folks you call friends, who have paid to attend. The money raised at this event after the bills are paid, is not a lot in comparison, and all goes to TLCA to aid their yearly budget. Additionally, Rubithon has consistently supported Del Albright of FOTR for his efforts towards this world famous trail and BRC financially. The folks who work this event are also TLCA volunteers who put out a lot of time and effort towards a successful event. Failing to register is a slap in their face.

If you compare the cost of Rubithon registration to virtually any other 4x4 event, you will see the registration fee is extremely cheap. We have intentionally held the prices for the last 6+ years. However, I do expect them to increase next year.

In an effort to ensure everyone is registering, TLCA has secured the entire Rubicon Springs including Dirty Dozen. If you do not possess a Rubithon Camp permit by thursday evening, you will be asked to leave by the Springs caretaker and myself. I personally cannot think of a more depressing role or chore for me, than asking someone to leave.

Please support Rubithon, and show respect for your fellow TLCA member friends, by registering.

You would not walk into Wal-mart and take something from the shelf without paying... don't do it at Rubithon either because you are taking from your fellow cruiser buddies.

Please be sure to register. and thanks for listening.

Remember to bring a little spare coin to buy your raffle tickets. We have received some great prizes that you can win, but you can't win if you don't buy raffle tickets.

Also, bring in raffle prizes to the event. Small, large whatever. Bring prizes to the registration booth at the springs.

See you their.

Dave Thomas

Tony-This is well said, and I agree 100% with it. There are always individuals who want to cheat any system, so prepare yourself for the thankless task of asking people to leave if un-registered. It may help prevent incidents like last year when the guy rolled off of Cadillac and was severely injured. He was un-registered as I recall. I think being part of a run, and part of a group will help to put a self-regulatory cap on bad behavior that might threaten the future of the event.

Regarding the finances, many people bring more $$ in alcohol:rolleyes:, then the registration for the event costs, so I don't think the cost of the event is a burden for anyone, especially given the thousands of dollars it costs to build a Rubicon capable Land Cruiser. Plus, even small fees tend to deter the foolish fringe element of our sport.

I am totally stoked for this year. See you in Rubicon Springs.

Hey Andrew --- What's this I hear that the FJ TT joined your run? 22 rigs? I hope you can keep them moving this year. Double locker run could get interesting...

Yep-they offered me a really fat bribe, so I took 'em.:grinpimp:

Plus, they are operating under different rules this year, and are allowed to actually scratch the truck. They offered up two excellent drivers as well. I'm glad they will be joining us.

It's actually 20, since a couple guys can't go. It will be interesting, that's for certain. I was amazed how fast the run filled and then over-filled, which tells me there is a huge demand for this. As much as I like my 40, Wagons are the future of the TLCA. I hope we don't disappoint. So, if the double locker run gets "interesting" as you say, give us a call on 146.460 and we'll come back and help out.:D

thank you Andy, Dave, Ross and John. You 4 are key players in Rubithon's success.

I was hoping I was not too mello-dramatic.

but I felt I needed to get my point across... in advance of the run.

I will bring money to register and plan to support TLCA and 'staff and members' equally and 100% - please have no doubt. I also plan to lend a helping hand as long as I am there. I am a team player and that's how I like it. I look forward to seeing everyone there. If I have to, I will ride in on my mountain bike to make it - and still bring ice : )

BTW - Can I donate some hungarian booze for the raffle - have a few bottles of grandpas old cough syrup sitting in the pantry?

great avatar Mickey... see you in there!

I can tell you 100% that the policy stated above by Tony is necessary and effective.
I can also tell you that it 100% IN NO WAY WOULD HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE IN WHAT HAPPENED ON CADDY. The person involved was not registered. If he had been asked to leave he would have been traveling the same trail at the same time. I do see how the registration rule supports the event but I do not see that it had anything to do with Josh's roll.

I would like to say that registered or not the cruiser community saved his life.

John-Unfortunately, I am very familiar with what happened on Cadillac Hill last year, and I disagree with your conclusion. If Josh had known he had to register and needed to be accountable for his behavior at Rubithon, it is likely the accident would not have happened. Either that, or the extra fee would have deterred him from going in the first place. Not to mention, if he had gone, he would then have been part of the "exit strategy" and less likely to have his accident.

Clearly this is a sport with inherent dangers, and injuries can and do happen every year. Let's hope this year keeps the accidents/injuries to a minimum.

The money would not have detered him as he was planning on signing up anyhow.

I do admitt and stress that being registered and on a scheduled run does highten your awareness and provide you a constant level of reminding by the fella's in your group to be safe. It is that exact feeling that gets our groups in safe and with outstanding enjoyment.

The second part is very true, and the sprit of help, cooperation, shared adventure and fun is what makes this a great event.

Looking forward to it, and a safe run for all.

Leaving Saturday. Tick, tick, tick....

the trail is very unforgiving - I have a harness and kept me from being hurt, but on a very "boring" section of the trail I was suddenly rolling because I was taking the trail for granted. Fortunately, we lost only a bottle of whatever (cleaned it up of course) but if we were not wearing our harness or if we had no exoskeleton, it could have been much worse. We were already eye shot of loon lake just descending on the granite. I dont like seatbelts on the trail, but on the rubicon it is more important than anywhere else to buckle up and triple check your line. Physics and basic geometry can be a painful lesson out there

John,

If Josh would have been on one of the organized runs, his rig would not have passed tech inspection. Let's start there.

I agree with Andy, being part of the event, understanding the rules, makes people more aware and accountable for their actions.

Regards

Alvaro

PS: I start loading up the rig tonight

Look, bottom line... no one wants to see what happened to Josh ... happen again.
Me for one.. dont want to see anyone cheat the system... I mean I paid, why not the next guy? ... do people that dont register for an event like this THINK they are special?
This is not a knock on John or Josh... (I know neither of them...) But John why are sticking up for Josh when he was in the WRONG!. if he's your friend cool... but he was WRONG for going alone without another truck, Wrong, for not wearing a seatbelt!
Wrong, for not registering! AND as I heard(and if I am wrong, please forgive me)
WRONG fro DRINKING ON THE TRAIL!
Now stop the bickering and get your ass's to the trail!
I leave in the morning!
Dave
