Hey All -

I just drove Seattle - Anchorage no issues.

96 FZJ, shift kit done (drilled to "truck" size). Trying to avoid having to go to a dealership, but I have limited tools and access. Sitting outside the airport right now:bang:
Pulled out of the gas station and then.... nothing.
Transmission wont engage in any gear. Checked fluid, it was overfilled by ~1qt (a bit under an inch past the full hot mark, when running at temp in neutral).
I purged the extra fluid, got it to move about 30 yards and back to engine revving with no movement.
All electrical has been checked for connections at the trans. I'm at a loss.
Frantically searching for an idea here....

Thanks

You sure it's not the drive flanges? Try locking the center diff just to be sure.

Sorry dude, drop the pan and see if you have mis-aligned the shift rod when installing the shift kit?

Checking drive flanges - might have overlooked the simple.
Truck drove great for 2000 miles - so it was a sudden failure whatever it was.

CDL locked and no movement now.
Drive flanges still had visible teeth. With the truck in neutral/neutral rotating the front drive shaft it wants to roll.

I’m wondering if the clutches got roasted being overfilled or just from being driven hard.

Still dead in the water.

how's the tranny fluid? Did you notice any burnt smell or debris in the fluid?
I overheated my tranny once and it wouldn't go into gear like how you mentioned!

Smelled burnt for sure. Didn’t see any debris but only let about a quart or two out. o
I would drain the fluid, drop the pan and change out the filter inside and do a Rodney flush and see if you can get lucky with changing out the fluid. These trannies can take a beating for sure. Might be a good idea to install a real time tranny temp gauge to monitorr the temp.

I’ll give that a shot if I can get it somewhere I can work on it.

Let it cool for a while and it moved under power but had a HARD shutter to it and then went back to slipping

My experience is that once the tranny cools and sit for a while, i was able to start the rig and the tranny would function fine without slipping. Not sure how far you can make it. but i was able to move a few miles, shut down, cool and repeat...

Called a truck to at least get me to the Airbnb for now.

If it happened suddenly that makes me think of something electrical.

When I replaced the engine wiring harness I forgot to reconnect the transmission ECU (under the dash) and the truck would barely move (felt like extreme slipping). It moved a bit better in reverse but not by much. Mine is a 94' so different than yours.

Worth checking at least.

Every shop I’ve found is booked 2+ months out that’s ever worked on one of these.
So looks like it’s on me to figure out or replace the trans should it come to it.

I was thinking something along those lines until I let it cool for two hours and it was able to move again. Hoping for simple but logic is leading me towards not haha

Was the ATF changed recently and if so what type of luid was used and were any additives added?

Fresh fluid post transgo shift kit install right before driving seattle to Anchorage.
Believe it was valvoline synthetic dex3/merc.
No additional additives.
Fluid smelled pretty bad for ~2000 miles on it.
