Main reason to take the spark plugs out, don't have to fight the compression and once the Timing Belt installed, you can turn the crank easily. You must turn 2 times (720 degrees) and check your 3 timing marks (2 camshaft and the crank). If they all align, you are done. If you are comfortable, you can start the engine for 20-30 seconds. If you can't start the engine, then recheck the 3 marks.

Looks to me like you're off on the crank by one tooth. The single dot in the left should be directly below the small divot. The two dots to the right of there should be on either side of the hole in the crankshaft sprocket.

Once I line those up. It will be positioned correctly?

The previous belt had no marks to go by.

Okay, well I tuned it twice and everything lines up perfectly. Ill finish tomorrow.

Im in complete freak out mode now. I turned it on and im getting a strange noise. The check engine light, battery and AT/OIL Temp lights are on. I made a video. I used my MaxiScan OBD2 scanner but no codes were listed.

I think the cam timing is off. Wonder if i should get it towed to my mechanic before i do any harm. I placed the belt in the slots, but the left cam shifted left a tad and i moved it back. I dont think this would have caused the issue. I turned the crank twice before putting it all back together. I did not hear any noise to indicate a problem. It turned fine with no excess difficulties.

I noticed i placed the belt with arrows facing me and not towards the pulleys.

On your pics the r cam doesn't appear to be at tdc. Looking closer it doesn't look like L is either. Both too far clockwise. Also why isn't there a L cam arrow on your drivers side cam?

L cam arrow rubbed off. R cam was where it lined up.

Any idea what the ticking could be? L Cam off on the timing? Does it matter which way the arrows point if they line up properly?

If it were me, I'd tear it back down and make sure the timing is correct. Having done this job in the past 6 months, I'm sure this is the last thing you want to hear.

In the pictures you posted earlier, the timing definitely appeared to be a bit off.

I decided to take it to my mechanic. Its still making that noise. I think the timing is off. Worse case the heads will need to be sent in for repair. Wont know until Monday-Tuesday. :(

There was a guy on here maybe 18 months ago who had just purchased a non vvti LX and thought he had a timing/ignition advance problem - symptoms included low power, noisy engine at highway speeds, high fuel consumption etc . Turned out his timing belt was one tooth off and it didn't throw codes or do any damage. You'll be ok.
