First, thanks for clicking...

I'm rebooting both front axles today and am finished with the driver's side and just pulled the axle on the passenger side. Once out of the differential, I noticed this little bastard sitting just inside the oil seal.

My assumption, it's part of the oil seal, but wanted to confirm with the group. Is this part of the oil seal or something else?

In the meantime, I need to haul ass to NAPA before they close to pick up a replacement output shaft seal. Hate using non-OEM seals.

Hard to tell from the picture, is that a spring? if so, it was the preload spring on the oil seal. I've never had luck refitting them, best to buy a new oil seal.

Thank you, yes it's a spring. I picked up a replacement and it definitely has the spring integrated.

I think that lives in the outer most dust seal at the knuckle.

Thanks, but it ended up being from the output shaft seal on the differential as @seanz0rz mentioned.

NAPA sold me the wrong seal last night, but, to my delight, one of the 4 Toyota dealerships in town is open for service on Sunday and their parts department had a seal in stock.

It's all back together, no leaks yet.

I couldn't tell the scale from the photo- glad you sorted it out and found new seals.
