Thank You Sir! have you ever encountered a polished journal that was too polished for the seal to work?

I am trying to determine how best to ensure that I get a decent seal on a crank with 350K miles on it already. Other than polishing and running an OEM seal, is there anything more that should be done with the rear main seal journal?

Yes, we used to get s***ty Jasper reman engines at the chrysler dealer that would leak out the rear seal because they had been polished down so far to remove the deepest groove in the sealing surface.

It is not necessary to remove the grooves in their entirety, just get the sharp edges off of the seal surface. The new seal will likely end up riding 1mm forward or backward of the 40 year old seal that came out, so the presence of minor grooving is irrelevant anyway.
