Quick overview - My parking brake was completely shot and I finally got around to replacing it. Since I had the rotors and brakes off I ended up replacing them as well.

I have it all back together now with all new parking brake shoes, and hardware, rotors, and pads. I did one side and then the other with the manual so I had somethings to reference. The brakes and parking brake seem to work fine. However when I am test driving it around the block and take turns I can hear something from the brakes that sounds like metal on metal rubbing. Not terrible, but not good either.

Do the pads need some burn in time? Would worn wheel bearings cause this kind of rubbing? Any ideas and or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Backing plate bent slightly? I've had this happen lots of times after working back there. Check for fresh scrape marks. Annoying but harmless if that's it.

The parking brake adjustment process is maddening (story of my weekend) and there are literally a lot of moving pieces. Particularly if it's been frozen for some time, there are many things that potentially have also not moved in that time down the line and are not moving as freely as they should. For example, you rebuild the parking brake drum mechanisms on both sides only to discover that the cable pivot point on the axle is frozen causing the now-rebuilt brakes to hang on a bit and drag because the cable isn't releasing as it should.

Assuming all parts of the cable are moving freely, repeat the adjustment process on the rear drums exactly (remove bell crank springs, put rotor on with 2 lug nuts, adjust star wheel to max tension, then back off 8 clicks on the wheel). Adjust bellcrank play on both sides and bellcrank stopper thing, then go through the main cable adjustment process once the shoes are adjusted on both sides.

There is a parking brake burn-in process described in the manual, I think using it to stop from 35mph (with the button depressed).

Got tied up in other projects today as I had to take a break from the brakes. lol I will look at these items tomorrow. Thanks for all he suggestions.

To answer a few questions, all parts are few moving or were replaced. My bell crank on one side was completely frozen, as were some of the other parts. Most parts were Toyota OEM, except pads, rotors, and shoes.

Everything seems to be together fine and back how it was. Even greased all spots per the manual. Thanks again, will look at this again tomorrow.

Im wondering about the parking brake adjustment.
