Labeled for ya.

ditch the front DS
ditch both birfs/axles
reinstall both flanges with caps
push CDL switch
do 2wd donuts in the snow(assuming the depth is reasonable)

I'll get more pics after I get off work tonight.

I'm having an issue with getting the DS steering arm back on... The disc brake dust shield is in the way. I pulled the hub/knuckle as one unit (didn't see a need to separate them....til now, d'oh).

I have done FJ40s and Fj60s like this for years. But when I tried it earlier this year on a friend's 80, we could not get the knuckle back on and had to take it all apart anyway. It might have been the dust shield that prevented it, I don't remember. I just remember we tried to cheat and replace an inner seal quickly and going back together it all went to hell.

What did you do about the stripped splines? Order new parts?

so how was the dif?

Update #2 - Everything is back together, sans axles shafts, birfs, and front driveshaft. And driving. So I'm just going around in 2WD, with a rear locker, and ice on the roads... :hhmm:

Pulling the 3rd is next up on the list, but I don't have time as of yet. I have a busy schedule this week, had to take out the Bug (no rust protection yet, loads of salt on the roads) to get to work and other commitments.

ever pulled the front third Lane? on the 3FE the tie rod has to at least come off on one side and moved outta the way but a whole lot easier with it completely outta the way, especially if you're doing it by your lonesome.

Really? Thanks for the tip, Eric.

So just how much does the thing weigh? It's gotta be heavy...

it's not so much heavy as it is gawkward... no good place to grip and it weighs in the 60's lbs... it's an odd bench press for sure.

I've never been able to pull one on the 3FE without at least the passenger side rod being pulled...

I was able to get the dif up and over the rod in the 1FZE

Ok, cool. I'll keep that in mind as I remember that I need a tie rod puller after I get everything apart.

Eric- I realize that the 3rd doesn't really do anything to support the truck, but I wonder if it helps with the entire axle structure... If I remove the 3rd, would it be a wise idea to have the truck up on jack stands? Sorry, I've never done this before.

Also, I was able to pull apart the axles and birfs last night. The short side birf is basically trashed and won't be re-used, except for a last-resort trail spare. The long-side looks to be in a lot better shape, but there is definitely some wear, though nowhere near as much as the short side. And the axle shafts themselves....well, I'm getting new ones. Anyone have experience with Bobby Long's inners? I'm aware of his birfs and non-DD compatibility, not asking about those...

I'll get some GOOD pics up in a few minutes. Hang tight.

So you re-assembled your hubs without birfs and shafts? And still running the third in-place? I never done that but if this is the case then.... no... you don't have to have the trucl on jackstands to pull the third... but obviously will need them when reassembling the whole axle.

Still running the third in place, but no driveshaft, axle shafts, or birfs.

Good to know.

Pics loading right now...
