This started two years ago, I found a rusted out FJ45, and was looking into getting a glass body for it...before I bought it, I went to Mike Gozzard's (he's close by) to look at his stuff. I was very impressed, but wanted to see a complete truck, he put me on to another guy, 30 minutes away that had a glass body on a 1979 BJ40, B engine, 4 speed. I checked it out, liked what i saw, but before buying the 45, the guy with the 40 called, to tell me it was going up for sale, if I wanted first crack at it. I bought it on my birthday in 2006. I use it for running around, some light offroading, camping etc....maybe 5000 miles this year...

Things I've done...

Unfortunately the B motor died last winter when I dropped a valve seat...I found another 3B in excellent shape and installed it...it went from in the crate to driving in 10 hours...this was the plan from the beginning, just happened sooner than I thought.

I herculinered the glass interior,

Cut the family cage off, welded up a more original style cage,

Took out the bench seat in the back, and installed the original jump seats...with new seat covers...

Made up a stainless snorkle (see my post for pics)

Various normal things, clutch master and slave went, tie rods, installed headliner, rebuilt front end (seals.bearings), wiring issues,

...recently I rolled it, so i'm just getting it back together, in the one pic, the dash is apart, i needed to get to the door hinges, just wanted an interior pic.

Future plans, turboing the 3B, install PS (have most of the pieces), in progress of welding up a rack for the back to hold fuel cans, tire, jack etc, weld up front bumper, install a 24v winch...

I've gone through some difficult times, in the last while, and can honestly say that taking this truck out, breaking it and fixing it has kept me sane...I know you all understand that feeling of cruising with the top off : )

Thanks Mudders, for all the help when I do break it...enjoy the pics...

Still dig that snorkle of yours. Kinda hoping one day you'll think about making a few more and selling them. Nice work on your build and keep those pics coming.

Kevin

I am working on the snorkles, for all those that i commited too...try me, I might still fit you in....the rollover and small number of snorkles has slowed progress down...

Looks great Mike!

Looking forward to my snorkle....... you have an ETA?

Nice build, it is therapy, isn't it !!

Hi All:

So, how did the fiberglass tub handle the roll-over? Any pics?

Regards,

Alan

Rollover pic

By request....yrollover damage....the truck ended up on it's side and slid on bare pavement...y

you can see the front fender was pushed in, and scuffed, it has a crack on it's radius all the way around, I'll grind it out and glass it, probably glass the backside too...

the mirror is broken, no big deal....

running board scuffed, no big deal,

you can't see it but the rear quarter has deep scratches, but no cracks....

The top got tweaked, so I had to adjust the doors,

the roof edge got hammered back, and blew out about 8 rivets...i drilled them and replaced with SS nuts and bolts, to pull it back together...I cleaned it up, resealed it and painted it...I will replace the bolts with rivets one at a time once I get to it...

The front axle seal was going, and after the roll was completely shot, so i am just rebuilding that now, waiting for bearings to arrive...

other than that, just CDs and change flying around inside

Hi All:

Good deal - looks like the rig did not get very much damage at all from the roll-over.

Regards,

Alan

no, all things considered, minor damage really...just nig nog stuff, enough to keep me off the road during the biggest snow storm in a while, when i need my truck : (

I like everything about it.

it's fibreglass, the salt won't hurt, lol..no, it's lake huron, I went in on a camping trip to clean the mud off....

Nice 40; even if it is one of those new fangled ones with the strange ambulance doors on the back.:D

Really nice. Makes me green with envy.

It only has amby doors 50% of the time....

nice lookin cruiser! two questions though.. how do the doors and other things like that mount on the gozzard tub? and do you know if he is still making these tubs?

glad you and the truck not too badly banged up after the flip

The front doors are mounted to two stainless plates in the body, using the stock hinges...the ambi doors also use the stock hinges, bolted to rivnut styke anchors i epoxied into the body...

He still makes them, but you have to talk to him direct...

Cool pic in the snow. Do get much of that around here.
