Need advice as I haven't seen this before. Front rotor on passenger side is coming in contact with caliper in the center and outside edge which is visible with wheel removed. Brake pads look fine and have plenty of material left.

I looked at it last night with the wheel and caliper out of the way. The entire hub assembly is loose. I can shake it from side to side (3 o'clock to 9 o'clock) about 3/16ths of an inch and can also push and pull it backwards and forwards about 1/8th of an inch (along the z-axis if you will)

I purchased inner and outer bearings as I'm thinking this is where my problem lies.

Can anyone offer better insight as to what may be the problem?

Yep, sounds like bearings to me. Did you order just the outer race? I would guess you will need the bearing as well if it's that far gone. Hope you get her fixed!

So problem solved! Lock nuts had come loose because the star washer had not been properly installed the last time the bearings were replaced/checked/repacked (did I mention this LC has 218k on the clock). The bearings were in great shape. Cleaned everything up, repacked and reinstalled.

Loose nut caused loose hub and that caused the rotor to shift at an angle just far enough to contact the caliper. Threads on the spindle were just fine. All is well and LC can go back to daily driver duty.

Anyone know what size bolt threads into the outer end of the axle?
I can't quiet pull it out far enough to place the c ring to lock on.

If I'm doing a full on service of the hub, I replace the star washer, both nuts and the spacer. If I have to pull the hub to just fiddle with the pre-load or grease the spindle, then at least a new star washer when it all goes back together..

Star washers are cheap, repairs if a used one fails might not be:meh:

Brand new star washer, seal, and flange gasket. Reused everything else as it was in great shape. Saving bearings for later. I guess I could always take them back to dealership too...

Not sure about bolt for pulling your axle. I was able to wiggle it from the inside to give myself enough clearance for the C ring. Good luck.

I wish. My garage is so full of stuff that I've got to do all my projects in nice weather.

M8 (=normal 8mm bolt)

There are a few that Mr. T put right close by that you can use for just such an occasion. They are the ones that are in various spots to hold down the ABS sensor wire as it leads to the caliper. They work perfectly for this.

Why do you replace the adjusting nut and the lock nut each time? These are reusable parts according to the FSM. What spacer are you referring to as well?

The star/lock washer should be replaced each time.
