I'm looking at rear bumper/roof rack options and think I'd prefer to carry my jerry cans and tire on the back bumper (ala SROR or 4+ bumpers) but would like some sort of permanently attached latter to get to the roof. I've seen some Mark Whatley custom roof racks with permanently mounted ladders that are on the left rear quarter. The pictures are never real clear, but they appear to mount to a custom rear bumper that wraps around for the bottom of the ladder.

Has anyone seen anything like this? Can anyone guide me in the right direction to find a roof rack/ladder like this combo?

thanks

Robert

Here's one. Not sure what rack/ladder that is but I like it.

Does anyone know?

So these pictures are what I'm referring to. I can't find a maker for these (i.e., the only one I've seen is a reference to custom made racks by Mark Whatley). I'll search some of 2badFJ's posts, but I think these are ladders on the rear bumper that swing out.

Why do you guys think side ladders are bad? I know they potentially catch things when off roading, but otherwise?

Robert

No problem if you wheel it in wide open places all the time. It's a real tree/rock catcher if you ever wheel in tighter spots.

Mark did the roof rack and ladder on this truck. Tie the bottom of the ladder into the sliders on the quarter. I would use a bushing where it attaches to the roof rack, and to the sliders, to allow for flex. You are effictivly attaching the frame to the roof, so you want to allow for a LOT of flex when wheeling.

Thanks everyone. After looking at a lot more pics, I think I'll have 2badFJ do me a bumper w/ a ladder and then just put the jerry cans in the roof rack.

Appreciate all the advice.

great choice! He does great work.

The rigs may be canadian. I wonder if our northern friends know who makes it.

all of those rigs pictured bu bruce and eclid were done by me... they all had bushing when they left the shop
in tight trails it may be a problem, but you are talking inches only and less that the tires stick ou in most cases. In any but the tightest trail it will never be a problem anyway... and they are removable

I have not seen anything like them from anyone else

The rack and ladder on the blue '62 was driven through a brick wall (low door)
tore the wall out
no damage to the rack

Mark...

Mark,

So do you still build ladders/racks like that? I'm sending my FJ62 out for a swap (gasser for diesel) but will be wanting to put a new rack/ladder on when that's done.

Thanks.

Robert

The ladder, rack and bumper (with or without tire/gascan carriers) is a package... with installation since the quarterpanels are bobbed before the bumper goes on.

Mark...

AKRaven had a side-mount rack on his 60, I think.

A solution that I like is very common here- two or three hoops mounted on the D pillar.
Not a full ladder, but no clearance issues (and a great place to dry a towel)

I'll see if I can find a picture

here you go

look carefully at the right side D pillar.

I access my roofrack/tent with a side ladder that MAF sells. It is removable and the base rests on the rear tire. When not in use I store it in the rear of my truck. Has worked well and been in service for many years in many countries.
