I have a full roof Wilderness rack, and it is a tough time getting up to it. was thinking i could leave the tailgate down and rear hatch closed. Stand on the tailgate to get to stuff. still too much of a reach, and i am 6'2".

what i was thinking was a step on the rear hatch, just to get a single foot-hold. What is there now is only the windshield wiper. doesn't hold well. i got a fold down step that mounts to the outside of a horse trailer, but the bracket is too big to fit in the space to work with. a rear-hatch ladder would be ideal.

any ideas?

jeff

What are the dimensions of you rack? I am thinking of building one but I need the measurments. Height width and length if you could. Also how does it mount?
Back to your Question. Do you have a hitch? Because I was thinking about building a step that I could eihter slip into the hitch or design it so that I could leave it locked in and fold it up in place.
Just a thought.

2badfj's has a ladder that he is selling...

I stand on my sliders or rear tires. For better access from the tailgate I stand on an empty milk crate. If I'm loading a bunch of stuff I just get up there. I've broken my windshield wiper 2-3 times in 6 years.

ladder made by ENKEI, sold by Mot...

good luck finding anything even close to the quality of this enkei ladder..

i was thinking something a little less neck-breaking possibility than a milk crate. works in a pinch though.

the pillar steps are cool, but not sure how practical.

ideally, i would like to have a ladder, but i haven't had much luck in the past tracking one down. not sure how available they are. i have PM'd MOT about them. is there a ladder from the rack down to the rear qtr panel on the side of the truck available anywhere? saw a pic on one of the links from above.

has anyone had any luck with part number for the d-pillar step, from the pillar link? are these available from Toyota? or do i just ask around for some used ones?

thanks for the great info.

If you do much wheeling in the woods, the ladder on the side of the truck will be a pita to keep off of trees.

I have seen ladders that have hooks that go over the rack and then have a plate that rests on the side of the tire. It would be removable so you would not have to worry about the tree thing. Also you would be able to take it from side to side. I will try to find a picture if it for you.

Have you thought about just bringing along a step ladder? This will give you access where you need it. When I made and aluminum roof rack, I also made an aluminum ladder that could free stand (A-style) or hang from the rack. The thought was that I could also use it as a traction device in a pinch. It turned out that my aluminum welding didn't work out so I went a different direction...but the concepts may still be valid.
