roof rack

since all my money is tied up in wheels&tires and that doesnt invlove doing anything over than buying them. i want to weld up a a full lengh roof rack and im goning to use half inch steel. i was just wondering if it would be too heavy..is there a crush weight for the roof...a while back a saw a funny picure of some guys roof caved in because he put to much plywood on his roof...and i dont want to load up the roof with crap on long trips and worrying about the freakin roof caving in...on the plus side if there is nothing to worry about it would be cool as all hell to throw a mattress up there to sleep on long trips.. just would not want to roll out of bed

I just built mine a couple of months ago. Made from one inch square tube with a ladder. Weighs about 80-90 lbs total. No way it will crush the roof. I mounted mine in the gutter valley for a little extra suppport. I carry a 35x12.50x15 MTR up there all the time with no probs. Troy in Tahoe

My cross bars are four inches apart. Tripple bars for the spare mount with 5/8 inch thread-all for the hold-down. You can unscrew the hold-down if you want to sleep up there. Here is a profile shot. Let me know if you want a better photo of the mounts I fabricated. Troy in Tahoe

Wife drove it to work today. I will post photos of the mounts tomorrow. For the ladder I just tacked it up top cut it almost all the way through where the body line drops and bent the tubing to conform to the body line. Once I got it where I liked it, I welded it up. It would be very easy to make it removable if you decided to. Everybody seems to think it will get torn off (Not). I built the same rack for a ZJ I used to have. Rubicon several times with no problems. The ladder is two inches closer to the body than the side mirriors. Better to scrape the ladder than the body any how. I painted it with Duraliner and never looked back. No way I'm paying top dollar for a Conferr (chick rack) Go big or don't go at all.

P.S I'm planning to build a hood rack also from 1/2 inch square. Sort of like what you see on Quads. 8)

Just a shot of our roof rack,its a TJm from AUS n we modified it
It works well and if you want to cover it for special jobs we put a sheet of marine ply cut to suit
The gutter clips are clamp type n we put a piece of alloy cahannel along the gutter to strength it ,the frame clears the roof by 2ins
