Gents,

I need help.

I want to buy the TEPUI tent. I currently have the factory roof rack rails with cross members. I am looking for a roof rack full length that would allow me install the RTT and still have some space left at the front for mounting gear. It can be just a low profile flat roof rack to which i could weld some brackets at the front to keep the gear exra secure and allow me to mount some LED bar or spotlights.

Im looking for these solutions:

1. Roof rack example
2. Attachements to the factory rails with means of thule cross members
3. Removal of factory rails and installation of some aftermarket mounting system

What is the best way to go and example if someone has done it already.

Thanks!

Slide out rack

This weekend I took my first trip with my RTT.

I went with the TJM Boulia tent (economical, likely made by the same Chinese factory as the others). I got a sweet deal on the tent through British 4x4... $1000 out the door with the awning.

I threw it on Thule roof mounts, specific to the LC. Worked like a charm.

In light of your question, and given my own thoughts this weekend, I'm working to make up some plans for a slide out roof rack that utilizes the existing factory bars, and nests under the tents.

Anyone seen something like this?

I have a Cascadia Mt. Baker on the way and will be putting it on some Yakima Bars for now. Yakima has towers that attach their crossbars to your factory rack. Tents have been mounted on everything from the factory rack to bars to fancy expo racks, as mentioned, search is your friend, there is little uncharted territory ahead.

I'm also interested in a flat rack but not at the prices of the currently available offerings. (The one I want is still out of production but the price is right) I will probably end up building my own rack and buying some mounts this winter.

I also have a Tepui gran savana RTT. I have a Baja Rack with two Yakima Rail grabbers that support the tent to the Baja Rack. I don't like the flat tacks for RTTs. IMO they limit usefulness. Anyway my 2 pesos....

That's a tough list of requirements to meet. Shane's set up is exactly what your'e describing and your best bet. I use the same set up to carry a cargo bag full of light camping gear, hi-lift, rope, axe, shovel, awning, rake, led light bars, firewood, water, gas. I put the cargo bag toward the back (similar dimensions to a roof top tent) and the gas, water, wood toward the front, with room left over for the sun roof to open.

What kind of gear are you trying to haul on the roof? Do you have a price in mind?

The gamviti rack is your best cheap flat rack solution. But doesn't offer much cargo carrying brackets or opportunity to mount other accessories.

Call Shane at LabRak and see what kind of options you two can come up with.

so this is what i went with:

TEPUI camo tent and Diamondrax hybrid roof rack that allows for flat part of the back for RTT and front of the rack has 6" side rails to store cargo. Your thought:)

a RTT will mount to the factory rack. Slept 2 people up there a few times and it hods up great.

^^ Agree with this. The factory side rails are very robust and keep the tent weight very close to the roof. Just don't mount it to the cross bars, use the rails for your connection.

I was going to suggest that but he still needs a way to carry gear up front. A RTT will take up the full length of the stock rails.

more than the gear, i always wanted a roof rack up there...always loved the look with a nice LED bar up front, plus the high lift jack, axe, shovel and a jerry can with extra fuel.

in the winter..place to put snowboards etc.

I just got the Baja Rack EXP...full length and room for tent or ???... But what's cool is the gear basket in the front...check it!

mounted to factory rack. No aftermarket bars, just what came with the tent.

A larger RTT (CVT Mt. Rainier) will take just about the full usable length of the roofline. Maybe enough room for a deflector or light bar ahead of it.
