When I turn all the way to the left or right, its like I am putting the brakes on. I jacked it up and the wheels will turn freely. I have 12.5 " tires with shackles for a lift. IS it possible the shackles changed the angle of aproach and the tires are rolling at the wrong angle ? I thought about adding shims to the leaf springs to put it back to original. The front end has been lined up and goes fine down the road . Thanks Luke

the brake lines are fine, the brakes are not the problem.I can spin the wheels freely whe jacked up.

Tires hitting leaf spring at full steering lock?

I agree with tires hitting springs, turn the wheels all the way to each side and check the clearance between tire and spring. How tall are your tires, a 35 12.5 tire needs more space to max turn then a 31 12.5 does. My Jeep scrambler had this problem, adding wheel spacers helped a lot, but replacing the steering linkage 100% fixed it, not sure how but after replacing the tie rod and drag link it stopped rubbing.

What is the backspacing on your wheels? How much longer than stock are the shackles?

The shackles are 2.5" longer than stock. The wheels backspacing is the same as a stock wheel, I think it was 3.5"??

You've gotta be rubbing somewhere - frame, fender, etc

Is the problem the same no matter which way you turn?

Locker in the rear preventing differential action?

Its not rubbing, like I said I can turn the wheel all the way. to the right or left and it binds and will hardly roll forward. At that point I jacked up the vehicle and the wheels spin freely. I still think it has to do with the shackle lift changing the angle of the tires when turned. I suppose I could put some stock shackles on and try it. I looked into shims at a local spring shop but they did not know what size to put in. And said it would cost $350 which seems high.

Any chance a broken birfield would act this way?

I was wondering about that also. When I asked my mechanic about that he was unfamillar with a birfield.

Does it only happen when in 4wd , or anytime ? My 4 runner use to do the same thing, but only in 4wd. But it fixed its self and never was a problem again.:meh:

I think you may be on to something... Does this truck have manual locking hubs or drive flanges on the front axle? Are you 100% positive beyond any doubt that the transfer case is not in 4wd?

If it were in 4wd, and one side front jacked, the wheel wouldnt be turnable by hand. If two front wheels were jacked, the opposite side would turn opposite, supposing open front diff.

If lockout engaged and wheel off ground and bad CV, inconsistent resistance will be felt by hand in wheel rotation.. Lockout disangaged and wheel off ground and no tyre-spring contact, wheel risistance minimal.. Lockout engaged, wheel off ground, some resistance may be detected with experienced hand.. The experienced operator will feel spline 'backlash'

To create increased vehicle rolling resistance, there is either bad Ackermann geometry or no/limited differential action in axles. There is no differential in the transfer case..

To eliminate the real cause of this 'problem' try removing both drive shafts and starting again.. This way we know there is no resistance from the drivetrain..

My bet is there is some binding in the tyre-ground contact.

If your mechanic doesnt know birfield, he isnt a mechanic.
