Had the unfortunate experience of gently laying my 91 HZJ73 on its side (passenger) two weeks ago. The engine only ran for a couple of seconds until i switched it off and the car was back on all four wheels within half an hour or so. Oil leaked through the crankcase ventilation down into the air intake but nothing seems physically damaged in the engine bay.

Question is, what actions are necessary before i try to start it?
I did some research about the risks of hydro-locking and having the engine run-off. Then i pulled off the intake passage that runs over the engine and it looked pretty clean, well, as clean as it should be. No clear indication that oil had been flowing though it.
I also tried turning it over two revolutions with a wrench and a socket, not sure if that was a good idea, but it turned over just fine.

Dose that mean its not hydro-locked or should i pull the plugs just to be safe? Am i missing anything?
All tips very much appreciated.

As a precaution I would remove the injectors and turn it over a few times just to make sure that there is no oil hydrolocking going on.

Make sure all your injectors seating washers and such are all in place still and are accounted for. There are 3 washer/gaskets to take the nozzle bodies out.

Once that’s squared off make sure your fluids are topped up and put them back in and go though the process of getting it started by bleeding the fuel system of airlocks which can be tricky. This process may be a little intensive on your batteries.

Come to think of it, you could just pull the glow plugs and go though it that way. The whole point is to make sure if there is any fluid in here that is had a chance to escape and not hydrolock anything.

As above, pull glow plugs, turn it over for a while to clear any oil, check fluids, re-fit glow plugs.
I reckon it will probably fire up without bleeding fuel lines etc

Thanks for your suggestions.

I will pull the glowplugs this weekend and hopefully get some informative shots along the way.

This video about water sucked in by air filter (hj60) shows how to remove the glow-plugs and start a few minutes to get everything out:

I think/would maybe check to be sure (because I think some extra time to make sure it is ok is no problem)
battery level, rinse off fluid to prevent rust
diff level
transfer level
engine oil
brake fluid
cooling fluid

But I suspect everything oke, toyota engineers thought of everything.

Update:

I took out the glow plugs, came out surprisingly easy, and turned it over with the starter for a couple of seconds. Cleaned up the intake from the filter to the manifold. Batteries charged. Fired right up! Puffed some dark smoke right when it started but then it idled just fine.

Now is probably the right time to finally start that build thread.
