Seatbelts would probably help these guys!

Really most 80s and 100s I see in the boneyards have been rolled. Usually highway speed rolls which is much different than a trail roll. Most of them survive fairly well.

Engineering a cage in a 100 would be a lot of work considering you'd need to plan around air bags. And the late models with curtains would be even tougher. I wouldn't want to sacrifice those safety devices on the highway for a cage that would help on the trail.
Exactly my point. Even driving fast on dirt a there roll isn't the same as a roll on the highway.

how about this truck? it was posted on club lexus a while back, high speed rollover on a highway offramp or something of the sort.

Hey i remeber that guy; he was going around a corner fast a rolled into a large sand pile at a house being renovated. I think he said the sand pile actually saved their lives b/c it stopped the truck from rolling anymore. Slee put in a cage in blueberry for trail riding. I would not attempt hell gate in moab unless i had a cage; the side bags is something to consider but they were only put in in 06 or later so if you have a earlier model then go for it. the dakar 100 had a very nice cage but maybe to much for the every day person

My 04 has the curtain airbags.

my 03 has side curtains too. dont believe 06 added any air bags.

are you guys sure? I know i waited for the 06 to come out b/c of the vvt on the negine and the side/head air bags. can one of the toyota guru's confirm this??

I'm not going to argue it, but someone with more current physics might argue it. The people in that accident may have actually been better without a cage. Accidents are as much about energy absorption as they are about creating a safe environment for the passenger. Maybe if there was a cage more of the energy would have been transfered to the passengers? Accidents are tricky. If you knew in the morning what type of accident you were going to get in you could plan the vehicle for safety for that accident, but if I knew I was going to get in an accident in the morning I'd just lay around all day and watch TV and surf on Mud.

I am not a Toyota guru but I am sure the 04 LC sitting in my garage has the curtain airbags. Well as sure as one can be without causing them to actually deploy.

Last year I was in Dubai and went on one of the "turist desert safaris". They pick you up at your hotel and head out to the sand dunes. Great fun running and sliding up and down the dunes.

All of the Landcruisers used on the safari had roll bars like the one's shown at the top of this thread. They also use GMC Yukons, none of which had roll bars. According to the drivers, the Government requires that the Tour companies install the bars in any Landcruisers they are going to use. But not the GMCs'

It seems there were some rollovers involving landcruisers, where some turists were injured when the roof of the cruisers collasped. The yukons are considered safe. Go figure.

The picture below shows most but not all the vehicles that participated in the safari.

ginger i absolutly agree with you on the cage issue; the vehicle needs crumple zones also i stand corrected the earlier models did have the air bags. as far as the roll cage stuff slee (i believe to be the biggest off road guru for the 100) put in a cage for slow roller overs in off roading situations. the blueberry i think is a competition truck also You guys in the west have much more hazardous off roading places in which a roll cage may help. examply rock crawling etc.

i found some mor epics of the cages i guess you really have to decide what your truck will be used for the most?? but hey hear is a good question obviously nascar has no airbags but they do have cages i know some have died but they have much more crashes and walk away from them. now they also have helmets; are you gonna wear a helmet every time you get in your cruiser?

You can't compare Nascar to a 100. 200mph crashes aren't very probable in a 100 series unless you drop it from outer space. Not to mention the weight differences. Cages need to be engineered for the intended use.

I think I'm in agreement with your helmet comment. If you are going to add a cage you may consider a helmet too. And I'd definitely consider adding harnesses and using them all the time (which by the way are illegal on US highways). I have to be probably the only person who has ever been pulled over and recieved a ticket for not wearing my seat belt but fully strapped in using a harness. No DOT label, not legal. A regular seat belt offers too much slop and you could slide enough to bonk your head on the cage.
