Anyone used Rockstomper.com to buy Towstraps?

From their site, it says that their tow straps are "industrial-grade hoist sling material ". Sounds like a bad choice for tug straps. But they also have a pretty serious competition buggy.... so I'm inclined to believe that they must have some idea of what they are doing.

And they have a great deal on amsteel winch line, so I plan to do business with them anyway and would rather do all my ordering at once.

Thoughts?

well, they may be selling tow straps, not snatch straps?

I would have thought that too. On their site,"Our standard towing and tugging strap. We use industrial-grade hoist sling material (it's even rated for overhead lifting--the most demanding application around--are yours?) and only premium grade webbing."

My impression is that tow straps and snatch straps are tow different animals and that it is not a good idea to use one for the other. One you want stretch and the other not.

Yep. Two different straps for two different uses.

I'm betting that serious competitive rockcrawlers don't have much use for snatch straps. Tow straps maybe, snatch straps nope.

Mark...

Good point(s).

Ok.... anyone have a recommendation for decent priced snatch straps that are either online or in the Washington DC area?

I've bought from RecoveryGearUSA and been pleased. Ditto for Black Rat stuff. But I've also had a cheap ProComp one that's lasted for years, so...

I've been happy with my Slee OffRoad strap. Big MUD supporter and LC focused shop.

yeah... I usually look for cheap tug straps because every time I destroy one, it is due to abrasion or cutting. I figure that no matter how high-quality the strap is, if I run it over (or someone else does) the tires ar going to damage the strap beyond useable. Probably.

I guess that I did break one, but that was trying to pull a Propane truck out of mud. If I had a stronger strap I would have just busted my truck instead of the strap!

I just bought a tow strap, 100' of synthetic winch line, and a few other odds and ends from Rockstomper. Haven't used it yet, but the strap is very heavy duty and well made. They were super folks to deal with over the phone, prices were excellent, shipping was cheap, and I had the correct and complete order on my door in four days (with UPS ground shipping). Would that all my purchases were as easy and satisfying as that one. They will definitely have my business again. Disclaimer: no association with Rockstomper whatsoever except as a satisfied customer.

I have Rock Stomper Tow straps ( 2 of em at 30' ) and a 6' tree protector -- they are very high quality

I run a buncha Scotts stuff on my rig.. he is a seriously stand up guy and has very simple, cost effective gear. I know very few vendors that I would reccomend more than scott @ Rockstomper..

What about using the winch extension lines for a strap? I am thinking that would save some space in my already crowded 40.

I assume that you are talking about the synthetic winch line used as a snatch strap. It will have not strecth and for a snatch type extraction would not be appropriate. The snatch type recovery depends on recoil caused by stretching and there is none. This is a pretty interesting South African site that goes into much detail on snatch straps.

You should not use a snatch sort of strap with a winch due to its stretch and storing of energy that could come right back at you during a failure. A non stretch type winch line extension is appropriate in this situation.

Their prices are the same for 2x50' or 1x100'. I have been trying to decide if it would be better to buy the single line or two 50' lines. Why did you choose a single line?

Scott is a great vendor... I would not have a second thought about buying products from him.

Thanks for the advice, folks. I ended up going with Slee simply because I know that Christo spends time on this board and was led to believe that his shop helps support it.

Very happy with my order/service.
