Well I finally gave up my search for a chrome spare wheel when four non-chrome wheels ended up locally in the classifieds. So I will be ditching the chrome stockers soon. But the wheels I picked up are rashed up pretty good, they look like someone curbed them every time they parked the car. So I was thinking of trying to clean the lips up a bit with a grinders and then maybe shooting a clear coat on them in those areas.
Is this a stupid idea, should I just leave them be? I know I would have to be careful when on the lip of the wheel so the tires wouldn't break seal later on when wheeling.

I will try to post up a pic tonight of the worst one.

OK so here is a shot of the worse one. Only two of them have a little scrape on the inner part of the wheel for the most part all four have the lips of the wheel just chewed up like this.

You might be able to media blast them or bead blast them... but shoot... for that price.. i'd just powder coat them, then rattle can them when they get scratched. OR maybe, get beadlocks put on them at Champion?

Must have been on a Cruiser driven by a :princess:. :flipoff2:

Personally I wouldn't worry about it. Shooting clear on the affected areas only would be very difficult to get to stick well since you would have to scuff the surface to get it to stick and where do you stop the scuff without creating a noticeable line between the old and new? I would use and angle sander with a 3" roloc disc. You could progressively go to finer grit and eventually to Scotch Brite discs to create a reasonably smooth finish that would likely match the factory machined finish pretty good.

When I have free time to waste, I am doing this on my new used DD 01 325I...Because of the sport suspension and low profile rims and tires, the PO put some descent road rash on the rims....Yes, a female PO.

Here is a link to a DYI. I wonder what the matching spray paint is to match the original finish on the LC wheels...

?

Sounds like a lot of work to scatch them up again. My suggestion, scotch brite and rattle can. That is what I did two years ago. Wheeled them with no issues.

Wow, that turned out NICE.
I am not trying to make them brand new again but just thought a quick hit with a grinder to sand the chunks down would be a little nicer. Then figured I should hit it with some clear coat to seal it up.

I don't want to paint the entire wheels black because the colors of my rig are tan & gray and I don't think gray wheels will look that good.
Also I don't think you can add bead locks to an aluminum wheel? Can you?
