Rock lights--the lights that mount on the frame by the wheel well to light up the front tires so you can see what your tire is rolling over when wheeling at night. I'm looking to put a set on the front of my 80, I just don't know if it'll fit on my 91' with the exhaust in the way, or if it is a good idea to have wiring and lights near any of the exhaust. Does anyone run these?

I prefer to sleep at night and wheel during the day. That said, mounting up cheapo utility lights under the truck as rock lights ain't no tough trick. Just pick a place where they are semi protected and toss 'em on. Don't go too $$$$ as they'll likely got knoggered around a tad.

Nothing better to spend your time on?

I have some spare rope lights I'm going to string arounf the inner aspect of my frame rails once I get a second battery ... :flipoff2:

Had a feeling when I saw it was Junk and Tyler were the only ones to reply that I was gonna get flamed. What Junk I'm not a :princess: like when I posted about my tail light guards?

:flipoff2: to both of you.

But thank you for the input.

You think I'm joking I guess ...

... I also know a guy thats going to run red .. but my lips are sealed . ;)

Just put some street glow on there. Haha

I second this, it works really well for dropped escalades traversing speed bumps at night.

I actually really dig rock lights.... camping, wheeling, anytime at night they are super helpful. Just cause everyone esle doesnt do it doesnt mean you shouldnt. I Have tons of good trails super close and i stay out late with buddies all the time..... I dont use my trailer lights anymore so thats what i used for my power and they were super easy to set up..... go for it.... let us know how it turns out

Actually the suggestion of using "streetglows" or "underbody neons" isn't far off. Several rockcrawling oriented shops have started carrying them for just that purpose. I believe you can find them on www.roundeyes.com , but basically the blue ones seem to produce the most light and distribute it the most evenly. Of course I have no real world experience with this, just from the talk over on PBB. As for me, I installed some cheap lights($10 a pair from Northern Tool I believe) on my old heep and although I never had them wired permanently(started the project by installing the lights themselves, and then got busy with other stuff and never finished the project), the lights were under the truck for over a year, including several wheelin trips that involved water crossings and countless rain storms. I ran power to them shortly before I sold the rig and they all still worked... FWIW

Maybe now he'll believe me .. :flipoff2:

PismoJim has some rock lights on his 60 (I don't think he has them on his 80 yet). He used 4 or 5 12v flourescent tube work lights linked together to a single switch. Looked pretty darned cool when I saw them in operation.

I plan on doing something similar. I really don't plan on doing much night 4-wheeling, but could see myself in a situation where it might happen -- you never know what could happen on a trail...and when you might need to drive out.

Whoops....I thought you were being sarcastic tyler :D. Saw a lot of heeps with this mod on it so I was planning on someone flaming me .

Would having a light near the exhaust damage anything including the light with so much heat?

I was planning on mountiing the light on the frame but it seems that it's close to the exhaust..

Any ideas?

Oh and the lights costs 19.99 a pair at Advance Auto Parts stores...

nyk,
inbetween the flame lines lies some real insight.
The junkster told you to get el cheapos, if the exhaust burns them then you are out $10. the lights will not hurt the exhaust, might smell funny but that about it.

Insight was noted :D.

So it'd be alright to mount the lights near the exhaust...I think I'm going to pick up a pair of lights this weekend.

I'm running 3 55watt rock lights under my 80. One is on top of the spare tire winch crossmember. The other two are bolted to the body near the slider mounts. I like them. Just get the cheapest driving lights you can get at Wal Mart because then if you smash them or rocks chip them you don't care. Also I got pretty small ones like they use on air intakes on the little Hondas running around. They give off plenty of light for their size.

You know those wireless cameras you see advertised on the TV ? I wonder if guys could run those under their cruiser , and pic up the signal on an onboard laptop ... instant remote viewing .. :D
