I was looking at one of those cheap jap tractors at a local tool sale thing. there were several jap tractors there. I can't remember if it was a dahtsu, kumatsu... something like that.
but where the bell housing bolted up looked A LOT. like a 22 re.
now I had nothing to measure, just the way it looked.
it was rated at about the same HP.. but the torque was way up there. I am thinking it was a 3 cylinder diesel motor.

anyone ever looked further into this?
would seem like it would be an awsome low rpm motor for crawling.
 
IMO it doesn't matter. I've seen how (agg, forgot the name of the company) that company that makes adapters for the VW motors, makes their adapters.


I'm waiting till I find a Merc motor :bounce:


It's a plate between the block and BH. Stencil the two and wallah!


Another thing, I'll bet a Kubota would kick but in a mini, you just couldn't go over 40 with it :D
 
Kubota's rpm range is very low, and the 3-cyl is loud as heck. I actually passed on the (cheaper) Kubota 2350 tractor in favor of a 2305 John Deere due to the engine... the Yanmar is MUCH quieter.

but back to the question. yeh. low rpm.. lot of power. may not be able to go fast. but, I scratched 5th gear off the shifter along time ago. as long as the truck could still do 50, I am good.
I am just thinking that there would be more power at 1200 rpm then my built 22 re at 4500.
these are rock crawlers, not fast and furious cars.
so anyone had the chance to measure these tractor motors out?

the block, if I remember right did not look any bigger then the 22re.. that is what got me to looking at it...

dang I should have had a tape measure and a camera..I will the next time around.

ACME Adapters ACME ADAPTERS Suzuki Samurai Turbo Diesel make adapters to mate a VW TDI engine to a Toy transmission. It for a Suzuki application but its still a Toy tranny. The TDI's can make some great power with an aftermarket chip. My Sisters Jetta TDI has a chip that makes output to about 150hp and 300ft lbs of torque. it also gets 42mpg.


A 4b cummins is also small enough to fit but they're a bit heavy. There are tons of them out there and they are very simple engines to work on as far as diesels go.

Really. Even my 2LT-E (which is far from optimized for crawling) excels at it. If I was looking to build a bomber crawler, I'd buy a 3L in a heartbeat. The turbo only works once it's spooled up, so it's no real bonus on the trails, but the general torque curve of the diesel make it absolutely awesome off of the roads.

The 3L will even bolt up in place of the 22RE (or 20R, or anything in between), and you can get a factory bellhousing to mate it to the W or R series transmissions.

Why mess with adapters and stuff?

Of course a 3L will have more torque than an R series Engine, because of the larger displacement and more rotating mass.

To compare Apples to Apples, 2.4 Litre Engines, a 2L has less torque than a 4Y and a 4Y has less torque than a 22R. - The 2L has the largest displacement at 2446cc. :cheers:

Well, maximum torque yes. But I went from a 22RE to a 2LT-E. The 2LT-E has torque in all the right spots for wheeling. It's just the torque curve that is normal for a diesel powerplant vs the typical torque curve for a gasoline engine. Not that it was bad with the 22RE, but it's a whole new ballgame with the diesel.

I don't know if missouriman needs more torque overall, or just wants more at certain RPM bands. I've always loved wheeling with a diesel, they're just so "matched" to playing with rocks and such. I really would like to see a real crawler built with a 3L. I think it's be totally wicked.

Then I don't think a Diesel is what you want.

They're gonna run outta breath real short from 2-3k rpms. And with a Diesel that small I don't think it would take to kind the shifting into a higher gear and making it.


Also, for the money that you'll be investing in that sort of modification, there's allot you can do with the stock 3.5" stroke motor you got. Like a stroker crank


One of these days I'm gonna find out why a 3.5" stroke, 3.62" bore only puts out 115hp(EFI, 96hp carb)...:confused:
 
I know that the diesels don't spin up as high.. but once the horse power ran out, there was nothing.
that motor is 20 over doa rv cam, arp rod bolts, balanced and blue printed. header and larger exhaust... not much more that you could do to it.. had injectors cleaned and balanced. dual cases, 5.29 gears locked front and rear..

spent about 2500.00 on the rebuild of the motor. new factory oil pump, water pump... ect.

oh that was a 6500 to 7000 rpm assult on that hill...
