What a shame. The USFS should skip the guard rail and instead mark it and start fining people big money that go off the trail! A couple of $1k fines and word would get out REAL quick! I also laugh at some of it, the mtn bike trails at Wood Run Camp, that area was forested to nearly bare in the 30's? and still timbered now with big machines, yet my mtn bike tears up the ground too much. It is very frustrating dealing with gov't folks and I feel lucky we have Terry (local USFS) and Darin (local land use advocate) helping us. The economic value of the ORV areas can not be stressed enough!

It is very frustrating dealing with the Government. But at this point and time is when we need to work together with all other user groups. Somehow we need to connect with the quad owners and get them on the right sheet of music.

I highly doubt we will ever do that. Is there a way to ban them??

It's something we ought to try. It's just as much their right to use the land as it is ours.

What Quad clubs exist in NC?

Not really.... and from what I gathered from talking to some of the NC4x4 guys over the last few years at clean ups it has been tried before with nothing coming out of it.

I'm all for the trying, but if it has been tried and nothing is happening then their right to use the land needs to disappear.

Here is the latest news from Terry. An email will be going out soon to all clubs and then i or someone else can also post that info on here.

From speaking to her tonight here is what i was told.

We are waiting on a few things right now to see how we will go forward. Right now there are about 4 options on the plate. Before we can go forward as a group the USFS has to have their engineer / arch person to come in and see how we can go forward. Found out we put some guard rail up in the wrong place also. It has been talked about going around that area but the money to do that is not there. The best option out there right now is to put up the guard rail, but as of right now we do not have enough, so we can do some here soon maybe if they say we can go forward with that option. The other option is to have a contractor do the work, but again it comes down to money. RIGHT now the closing down permanently is not on the table, but we have to wait on the person from Atlanta say the final say.

So, BLUF ( bottom line up front ) we are waiting on the USFS have some people go thru there and figure out the best option of keeping it open. That is why we did not do anymore work on it this last workday when we had all the people out there to be able to accomplish the most.

Darin what kind of $$$ are they needing to buy the remaining guard rail.

This is the same language used on the Trout Unlimited and other discussion boards to remove "our" rights when bad apples in "our" group break laws, creating negative images for "us".

This is the common theme throughout our society right now...instead of punishing the bad apples from whatever group, its easier to simply remove access. Its cheaper to remove access, simpler to remove access and nobody complains when access is removed for the greater good (Earth).

Its my opinion that offering monitoring of trails (trail cops) with cameras capturing the law breakers, using "deer cameras" to monitor areas, busting the law breakers, exposing them via social media, providing the pics to those in power @ URE and documenting those causing the issues.

I'd offer the opinion to increase presence of law abiding users who aren't afraid to confront those breaking said laws, taking ownership in URE instead of offering a plan to exclude another off-road enthusiast group because of "bad apples"...

Its called mass punishment, and the only place i ever seen it work was in basic training.

We can not ban them. It would create some serious issues in court and other places like at the trail heads. Talking fist fights and worse yet. I remember when they were not on the trails. It was great, and the trails were alot better.

I'm hearing loads of people complain that the FS isn't doing enough, they need to post a person here and fine, they need to do this and they need to do that. How many of you actually know how many FS men and women are assigned to URE?

If I'm getting this straight we can only access Kodak during a workday or weekend. So this in itself effectively limits the trail to those users which are helping out with the guardrail and pretty much keeps atvs out completely. Would we get in trouble if we did a little wheeling after we performed our duties? That would be enough incentive for me to work on the trail and perhaps others. I may have missed a statement earlier, but does the FS have an issue obtaining all the materials?

Is that an actual club where we might be able to talk to someone.

Not a club per se like we are a club, more like a board like NC4x4 is one where there will be upcoming events but they are very loose and there isn't any sort of structured leadership really.

But it would be a good place to bring it up.

No, we never have an issue doing a little wheeling afterward. :steer: :steer: :steer:

Hey guys. Trying to set up a little gathering of the minds at the Jamboree coming up. Not asking for you to come , unless you are coming for that , but just trying to move forward with some ideas of how to fix the issues at hand and get it opened back up.

So I would like your ideas please of how we can get everyone on the correct sheet of music up there.

Thanks

Ive been lurking and wanna get involved. Met a few of yall at gsmtr . I should have more time on weekends now due to the new job.
Just be thankful there are no turtles or piping plovers!
