Have been given a old Rhino Winch by Norco Sales. I searched google and mud for any info and came up dry. Any one know how I should hook up the leads and or where to start trying to get it to go?

I am a novice on how winches work and want to get some basics before I tear into this thing.

It is a worm gear type, similar to the Ramsey RE series.

It is a series wound motor. To hook it up, the lug closest to the free end of the motor is the armature lug (A) The motor case is the ground (-). The two lugs together on the other end of the motor are the field winding ends, (F1, F2). To run it, hook up the + from the battery to either F1 or F2 (depending on which direction you want the motor to run). Hook the other F lug to A. Hook the motor case to ground or - post of the battery. To switch directions, swap the wires on F1 and F2.

Normally, you would use solenoids or an Albright contactor to switch the power using a remote switch. The wiring diagram will show which posts to connect where, but in general the battery + goes to one common pole of the solenoid, A goes to the other common pole, and F1 and F2 go to the two switched poles.

Pin Head thank you. So I need a solenoid and remote to have this thing operate? I will see if I can get it to turn with the setup you described.

Most people prefer using a solenoid/contactor and a remote. It will run just fine hot wiring it and sometimes you need to know how to do this if you get stuck out on a trail with bad solenoid, so practice hot wiring your motor. Everyone with a winch needs to know how to do this.

Honestly you don't want been stuck and hotwiring it all times .. solenoid or albright contractor will give you the hability to control the winch . . stop and go from a safety position when winching. Not to mention operate the vehicle at the same time. Look in the web for in cab controls that's another option.

It worked just as you said! It was stuck on the free spool setting so I'm going to have to fix that. I would like the ability to control it from a remote or in cab but knowing how it works is great.

Pretty much any solenoid for a series wound motor for the same capacity winch will work. The Albright contactor is nice because it is water proof. There is plenty of info here on how to wire them up if you search.

Awesome thanks pinhead! I got it working today so I will research some more on setting it up!
