Besides shifting it to gear, you need to drive around some. Shifting into gear works the linkages, driving does the gears and seals. I taught my Sis to do the low range stuff in the parking lot at the store and make a good 360 loop in each direction, then kick it out of low and drive home a few miles in high range. Just before home put it back in 2 W H

Pilot bearing bread trick
Well what do you know, it works a treat!

Also finally got the oil pan off. She fought and will need some bang bang around the flange but she’s off. Wife dropped the flywheel off with the machinist while I was out of town but waited until yesterday… hopefully I’ll pick it up tomorrow and everything can go back together.

A little bit of the the Michigan wrench works for bitchy pans. Done what you show. Would wave the wrench before I hit the sack. Tension her up. Let Newton’s forces do their magic overnight. Place a cushion below for a light landing!

Had to turn my head sideways to figure out what you did. Creative!

I definitely didn’t come up with this technique and it didn’t work the first time I tried it last week but maybe leaving it fighting gravity for a week helped?

So close…

Thanks Knuck’s,
Here she is a bit more revealing for this morning’s ride into the city…

There is a lot to like about the soft top and a lot to like about a hard top.

Does look sharp with the soft top. Is that a OEM top or did you get it from somewhere?

Thanks, it’s a TROA top from Columbia. I’m actually a dealer for them. Well, was until things got…

It’s definitely a trade off, there are things I like about both and things I don’t. Being able to roll up the sides and be pretty close to topless in a minute is definitely nice.

Input gear and spacers
They go this way:

So, the above is a reminder for all those who come after… take pictures as you’re taking things apart. It’s harder to figure it out later.

This is one area I didn’t photograph but was finally able to sleuth it via the witness and wear marks on the shaft.

Speaking of which:

Digging around, it looks like there is not an option for a Long Spline input gear for a pre- 8/80 non-split transmission. 16 spline 32mm.
Am I missing something?

I plan to hit up Georg @orangefj45 when it gets to be a reasonable time of day.

Not the same but my my last bearing on that output shaft was out near the stake nut. Not apple to apple here.

I did confirm it with a couple diagrams. The confusion was in the two similar spacers, one takes the place of the PTO gear. The wear marks all lined up so I’m pretty much Sherlock Holmes and stuff.

But what is this jewelry here? Split case goodness?
I know. Sheesh.

You can get input gears from a few places I see - (well last time I looked at parts).

EDIT: This is not for a long spline that would cover any wear on the shaft. It is just for the normal input gear that I see. And maybe a call - Or, I can go visit him later this week. I need to find my way there eventually.

What I was told by Georg (as I remember it), is that the main shaft in the trans wears in our pre 8/80 system, and you will hear/feel a thunk. That is why, when I get back, I will be doing my transmission along with the tcase. Don't have that fancy, replace Tcase in place setup like Alan.

Oh yes!, my '81 is a 34mm split case. I sourced this new 38mm split case from @orangefj45 already machined.

Found out the reason a long splined input gear doesn't exist for non-split case transfer cases is that there would be no way to install them. They would be too long to fit through the PTO hole.

I really do try to exhaust my research before hitting up Georg because most times, as in this case, the answer is so obvious that I am reminded of how smart I aren't.
