Back with the squeal/jingle/whistle/?/noise mystery…

It’s been pretty cold here in central Texas (for central Texas anyway) with this morning clocking in at a balmy 35* when I drove my son the few miles to school. The noise is gone, yesterday (a bit warmer) and today, no noise.

Why would it be there when warm and not cold?

For your time and attention, I present you with an unrelated picture of me taking my camp trailer for a spin.

Cold gear lube is thicker. You'd probably have to drive it longer to heat up the lube.

Makes sense, but wouldn’t warm lube lubricate better?

Still curious about my mystery sound but maybe I’ll test your theory and go for a nice long drive somewhere.

Sounds like a good excuse to drive the 40. I wouldn't consider it a theory. Thicker lube fills the loose tolerances of worn bearings.

Next you’ll tell me the earth is round… 🙄

Welp, sure enough, once warmed up the sound came back. I guess that tells me something? I’m not sure what yet.

Maybe I’ll change the gear oil in there? It’s just money, right?

Remember, I just rebuilt all of this stuff. Is working fantastic otherwise.

Sometimes things need to seat/wear in to find home. How noisy is it? Find a hill nearby, put transfer in neutral and roll down the hill a ways in gear with engine off listen. Put tranny in N and transfer in 2H listen again and compare. Maybe a hundred or 2 miles at different speed and gears, loads. Then maybe change the oils and use a magnet on a stick to fish around in the cases lower end. Look for glitter in the oil.

When it’s happening, it’s noisy enough to occupy my attention.

To recap:
- it “turns on” almost exactly at 2,500 rpm
- only under load
- immediately cuts out with the depression of the clutch
- not present when around 45* and below
- no performance issues to note

I’ll see if I can replicate any of your suggestions.

Thanks for chiming in Charlie

Mine use to be noisy when starting at -40 F and sounded kind of like the PS belt slipping unit it warmed up. I had to put the transfer case in neutral and put the transmission in gear and feather the clutch unit it would not die and was able to idle while it warmed up. But then again it has been a long time since I had to get a manual running at -40 F.

Did that exact process in 1976..Fairfax, Vt….-52F. A real freaky week of weather.,,then I’d let it idle15 minutes or so to get the metal warm enough to warm the oils. The shift cane was ridiculously hard to move

Thanks for the memories!! 😉

It’s been 23 plus hours.

Assuming you’ve had more than sufficient time to rebuild the entire drivetrain and re-tin the barn roof..

“… plus hours” is right…

I don’t know what is going on with this girl. Driving home from picking the boy up the sound was way more faint. Mid-60’s and slightly drizzly.

She’s tucked up in the barn until this rain spell passes, though I may go crawl around with the spiders and see if I can come any closer to an “Aha!” moment.

I'll be out and about this weekend if you want a spare ear.
