Made it out to Muleshoe Bend Recreation area with minimal fuss. This (about an hour on state highways) is the most I’ve towed this combo, definitely no room for error.

Love this place though, great mountain bike trails and hardly anyone here.

Is that one of those 710 caps? You could drill that cap and install a tether - doesn't guarantee you will put it back on, but you will find it hanging on the tether so you can put it back on.
I think the gasket had turned hard and if I didn’t really lean into it it wasn’t as tight as it should be.

I always “tap tap” after putting it back on as a way to remember that I did so I must not have torqued down enough.

No mess though and all the oil was in there. Had driven my son to school and did a bunch of errands over the last few days. Who knows when it jump ship?

I don’t know what a 710 cap is?
I could do that but I’ll probably get an overpriced TEQ one to feel better about the OE one I lost and throw this one in the glove box. Nothing guarantees you won’t need it like having an extra!

Nice camper! I have a Chev 62 step side to make into unit.
Was looking long and hard for a good Toyota one that wasn’t north of a mortgage payment and stumbled across this Datsun for $200 north of ABQ.

It wasn’t quite a trailer when I got it but we took it to SAS last year and it worked great. Roof top tents don’t belong on roofs of vehicles in my opinion, this is the best use of these.

Agreed

If you're planning on putting your vehicle in dumb places, certainly not the best choice to add weight in the worst possible spot.

Plus the added room for crap is handy with the trailer.

This trailer is shaping up to be my favorite camp setup I’ve had. Next step is to make the platform be about 1’ lower for travel and raise to its current height at camp… right now I just fit standing under the fold out and the annex is perfect at this height.

Getting the weight lower and out of the slipstream would be nice.

Trying out the Rhino Rack Dome 1300 I got off of Craigslist for pocket change…
Thinking a 270* batwing would be cool but this was too cheap to pass up.

I have a love/ hate relationship with my lid setup. It's about as low as it can be, but that lid requires 150# to lift the first little bit.

I haven't figured out a way to assist it in any meaningful way.

Plus I want to add an awning, which further complicates the opening procedure.

Making almost everything come out the back with drawers limits the need to open the lid a bunch.

If you get one and come up with a clever way to adjust the height, please share.
I’ve got a bunch of threads from expedition portal bookmarked on the subject of raising the tent.
Gas struts seem to be the ticket but you’d have to start from some sort of height as you only get about 2/3 lift with a telescopic type system.

Unless your talking about just the awning, then I don’t know, not going down that path.

Great trip. Fellow cruiser head and family came and joined @BigHighBlue but he brought his bad battery tundra.

Rode a few miles with my son on some mountain bike trails and hung with the family at the lake. Love where LandCruisers take us…

In preparation to go camping with my son I was checking all the fluids. I had checked the oil last week… I guess the cap had other ideas.

After some rescue attempts by some of my local cruiser pals (who knew there were so many different sized oil caps?) I figured I’d give my least favorite auto parts store a try as they are the closest. Bingo.
