Pressure plate was pretty groovy. Flywheel wasn’t bad but I had the time and @MatthewMcD would’ve been disappointed in me if I didn’t resurface it.
Mine had some hot spots that took a lot of time to get them cleaned up for my build. Mine had over 100K on the original parts.

I am dying to know the drive after all that refresh. IMO, you had a tight clutch when I drove Norman, interested to see the difference after seeing the clutch etc.
First test I threw gravel at my house and stalled it.

After adjusting it almost all the way to the end of the slave rod it’s perfect and the throw out bearing is about 3 mm off the fingers at rest. Crazy how much “power” was being robbed by the slipping clutch.

Need to do another round of carb love now, need more initial juice on the fire when shifting.

my ODO says 36,xxx so either 136,xxx or it was disconnected for awhile. Either way, likely the same.

Was this your first time to rebuild tranny? I was a little worried when I did mine, but it turned out great. I have a little whistle when I first push the clutch in . I think it’s the pilot bearing from what I read.

Technically this is the 4th time I’ve diddled an undercarriage to this degree. The previous three were on a split case and were more different than I’d think.

I too have a wee whistle but I can’t imagine it being the pilot bearing, the throw out bearing maybe. When I was testing I had the trans tunnel cover off and could hear that whirr or whistle but it sounded healthy so I just thought it was a good omen.

Took the family to dinner in the old girl and man alive do I love how she is driving. Saw this Tempest and had some great interior Mexican food.

My Cousin Vinny !!! Marissa Tomei, expert witness on the tempest!

Doh!
Took my son to school and on the way back, on the freeway, I noticed my hood moving a wee…

Doh!

Seriously grateful for the later model hood safety latch… that could’ve been ugly.

When I got the grill assembly I was glad the inside latch was there. They are also a tell tale that the bezel is on upside down.

I may have to look into that... I am hoping its no big deal.

If it helps, I don’t hear mine with the tunnel cover on.

Does it change when you depress the clutch?

Any blockage of direct to the engine bay has to help, right?

Orange and City Racer for the win…
Sorry @OlYellr Bryan, I couldn’t wait for your order from Toyota Matt anymore.

Hey Tommy (and anyone else listening),

I’m getting hung up on this whistle sound now,
I hear it around and above 2,500 rpm and mostly in 3rd and 4th but sometimes 2nd.

Goes away the instant I press the clutch.

Adjustments to the slave rod/fork downstairs yield no change.

Searching brings up similar but not same issues, lots of carb and vacuum leak threads as well as some that led to spun bearings 😳.

I’m pretty sure it’s downstairs and not under the hood. It’s just really hard to diagnose.

Leaving in two days for a +/- 2,000 mile round trip and I’m a wee concerned.

Pilot bearing?

Edit,
Actually the pilot bearing shouldn't be spinning when the clutch is out.

Have you tried changing the “terminology” from whistle (usually indicating airflow) to some other words….whirring, whining, etc?

I have an old tried and true method for finding things like this.

Drive it til it you let the smoke out.

This is a good point.

In all honesty it sounds like a whirr. But whistle is a good baseline. Like saying black as night, when it’s more blue.

I was trying to get the secondary to open on my carb so I’ve been zipping around at full throttle and it seems like this wasn’t as pronounced after a bunch of bat out of hell (for a 40) driving.

Tomorrow is the deciding day.
I’ll most likely send it.

New pilot, throw out and whatever other bearings in Georg’s rebuild kit.

Smoke in the west Texas desert may not be ideal.
