we recently upgraded an 87 FJ60 with Old Man Emu and have these tired old OEM leaf springs in the garage. Is there any value to keeping them or a purpose for them that I am not aware of? Otherwise I’m pitching them.

Some blacksmiths and other crafts people like them because they are usually good quality steel. There are plenty available though, so I am not sure they really have any value. You could try posting them for free on CL.

$0.04 per pound.

A good blacksmith can make really neat swords out of them. I gave a bunch of them to a shop I know and they made some amazing pieces from them.

minus the gas money to get them to the recycle center....

Wait until next Wednesday. The price of steel is going to increase twofold according to very recent predictions. Then it will be $0.06 per LB for scrap....... (yes, that's only 50%)

Swords and knives were literally the only uses I could think of without asking mud.

I used to live with blacksmith which meant we had piles of rusty steel all over the yard, and yes, they can be used to make some pretty cool blades(if they ever get around to it;)).

As long as they don't try to get you to "store" them for you until they are ready to use them, I would see if anyone from that persuasion might want them. You might even be able to talk them into making you a knife or something as a trade. That might be kinda neat :)

I totally forgot the tariffs. Great point. I can see the invest in steel commercials now...

FUNNY! It's because I drive an 80 and this is my go to. My son's is a 60. Good catch.

I figured as much.

For what it's worth, I knew a guy who made a sword out of an old leaf spring. Had it mounted above his door. So here's an idea:

Hmmmm....thoughts of a grapple like winch anchor come to mind. You could cut down a leaf into two 18 or so inch peices and make a V-shaped hook; and mount it to the the end of a long piece of heavy wall tube and weld on some sort of eyelet to hook a winch or shackle to.

They are useful for doing spring overs. Have used a couple of sets on FJ40s, soft, flat springs are just the ticket.
