I am the proud owner of a 1979 mustard yellow fj40 (see link for restoration)

http://www.restoredfj40.com/images/current_projects/yellow80/

It was restored with a Chevy V8 383 stroker engine and a new automatic transmission.

My question is how would I go about converting the transmission back to a manual? Can I buy an original fj40 transmission to work with the new engine? Any help is much approximated. Thanks so much everyone

I thought I might add that there is no parking break in the truck right now.

its simple you have to buy all the stuff needed to convert it back to standard including the adaptors .orange 45 or marks off road probably are your best bet for parts

That is a very tough question to answer. You are going to have your hands full for many reasons. The motor is a fixed point right now and more than likely so is your tranny/tc. If you remove the auto then you are going to pick a tranny. You can choose whatever one you want from GM or Toyota. You will need to buy the appropriate adapters whichever way that you go. Your Driveshafts are almost for sure going to be the wrong length when your done. The ebrake for your year is on the rear axle. You can overcome that a few ways by 1) replace the ale with the right one 2) add disk brake conversion w/ebrake on calipers 3) get a transfer case with the ebrake on it.

Sometimes it's better to answer a question with another question.

If you tell us WHY you want to convert from a 700r4 OD auto back to manual, you might get different answers than with a generic question.

Best

Wasn't until 8/80 the hand brake went to the rear axle. 79 It was still on the tranfer. So either they didn't use the one piece tranfer case that came on a 79 or decided not to use it. Guessing with a 700R the hand brake cable would have been to short. Hate to think they didn't install to avoid getting a custom cable make.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Much appriciated. I have been wanting to make the vehicle more original for a while and it looks like a lot more thought is going to have to go into doing this.

With a v-8 under the hood, there's only so far you can go with that"more original" thing. Just sayin.

Read thru the restore in the link. Mentioned using a sixteen spline transfer case which would have been the one piece transfer that came in the vehicle. The later split transfer case would have been nineteen splines. I have never seen a one piece transfer case for a four speed that didn't have the hand brake from the factory. Would be curious to see a picture of the bearing retainer on the back of the transfer case to see if has four bolt holes for the hand brake backing plate.

To Jpodles7:

I'm considering purchasing an FJ40 that has been converted to an automatic but would prefer a manual.

Did you decide to do the conversion back to manual?

Do you have a list of parts that are needed?

Thanks
Tom
