Ok, please tell me SOMEONE has a step by step guide for dummy's to replacing the starter on the 100 series!!! I've found a bunch of threads on people doing them but not many good step by steps with pictures if possible! Anything would help as I'm about to embark on this adventure under my hood this weekend! Thanks in advance!!!

very simple :
1. remove intake manifold 5 bolts on each side
2. then remove the starter.

note: when you put back manifold make sure to not pinch any hose or wire.

Ok, am I mistaken when I've seen all these other posts that you have to remove all kinda other stuff and undo all the hoses and drain fluids and stuff????

Have you even heard the saying "The fear have the biggest eyes" there are engine cover , some small hoses , intake pipe, sure remove the that , not a big deal all simple . There is absolutely nothing complex in this job like calibration something or must have a special tools or difficult place to get to, ya there is a bit clustering . o one important safety part disconnect the battery completely and do not smoke there is a gasoline line on the right that you need to unplug it is not supposed to leak but any wapor so I will sleep better if I know you got battery out. If you live in Boise Idaho I can help you.

You mean like these :flipoff2:

If searching through the very rich content of our FAQ section for all the answers, step-by-step how to guide including photos is too complicated...I suggest you take your rig to a competent mechanic.

Haha very nice! Thank you!!! I think I'll mount the go-pro and show a step by step for amateurs such as myself attempting it! Wish me luck!

Well, when you put it that way, it seems simple! Lol and I appreciate the offer, however unless your vacationing in Louisiana.....I'll be going solo!

As long as your practicing your searches; search starter contacts, you probably don't need a complete starter.

Well my friend you were right! Took me all day Saturday but I got it done! Slowly and carefully but I did it! Thanks for the motivation!

Any reason why you are buying a remanufactered one? A rebuilt one from Toyota is around the same price at $200

I assumed rebuilt and reman were the same? Where can I source a rebuilt one, and what is the difference?

Both terminologies of rebuilt and reman are synonymous but the one from Toyota uses Toyota parts. The ones from the auto parts supply houses use low quality parts which will lower the service life of the starter requiring more frequent replacement.

I wouldn't want to replace the starter again after doing it this weekend.

I'm attempting to replace the starter tomorrow.

I see your post. Then I see youtube videos where they clamp the throttle cable and all that stuff... it is REALLY just "remove 5 bolts"?

I would also get manifold gaskets. They are supposedly non-reusable.

You will have to remove the throttle from the manifold. Depending on your year you can just slide the cable forward.

The hardest part is going to be getting leverage over the manifold to get it out, its heavy and awkward.

There is a fuel line that is connected to the manifold, leave it attached and disconnect it from the fuel filter.

Be super careful not to drop anything in the engine while its off. Put tape over the open intake ports as soon as they are exposed.

Be super careful to not smash the front temperature sensor when putting the manifold back on, because it falls right into the block and then you have to pick up the manfold off the block again and fish it out with tweezers and hope you got it all.... yes i did that.

Just go slow and be careful, you can do it.

Thanks for that... I'm going to post how far I got today.

I'm replacing the starter on our 2000 Land Cruiser - the Dragon Wagon (I have twin daughters born in the Year of the Dragon - they're 6 now).
I got the top part of the manifold off... then discovered there a BOTTOM part of the manifold.
youtube video I found just shows a guy pointing at bolts and hoses and then WHA-LAH! there's the starter!
I got this far... and then i ran into this place... HOW THE F! do get the starter off? I removed bolt after bolt and now I have ONE MORE in the back that I cannot get this LAST (I hope) bolt off while this YELLOW WIRING HARNESS (I think that's what it is) is in the way!
Additionally, I cannot unscrew the yellow harness from the old starter because I cannot actually get a wrench in there to unscrew it!!!

Anyone able to help me understand how the heck to do this? I keep taking stuff off and it just reveals more things I have to take off!

HELLLLLPPPPP!!!

The red arrow is pointing to where the bolt is that I Can't get enough space to put a wrench in there to looses it. The Yellow is circling the yellow wiring harness. I've also pulled one of the wires out of the wiring harness clips... Parts numbers on that stuff would be great! I'll post a picture of that later.
