I have a 3/72 that has the ignition switch on the dash but that switch is pretty worn out. Consequently I am considering putting a newer column in it with the key on the column.

How complex of a change is this?

Electrical?

Spline issues?

Or does anyone have another switch you'd be willing to part with???

Thanks,

Brian

I just changed mine a 71 to a 76 type with the swich in the column . splines and mounting were the same just bolted right in .
The turn signal swich is different ,as it has more wires than the old one needs , But it is easy to use just the ones you need ,
The old one has just 3 wires a keyed battery lead and left and right sides ,
Just look at the new swich and use the same contacts as the old style .
The key swich has the same 4 terminials .
I cut up an old 40 harness and made a jumper to go between the 71 harness and the new 76 turn swich , so i would not have cut the truck or the new swich .
.
hope thei helps

Yes that helps a lot!!!! Thanks.

There is a chance I may steal the wiring harness off my '73 to put it on my '72 since the PO on the '72 decided to cut into it. Given that the '73 has the ignition on the column, I would guess that the harness will fit just right.

I just remebered , i had to cut a inch off the top column cover where it hit the cluster . .

Good to know - thanks Evan!

Brian if you need any pics let me know >.
I should have put them up on birfield but my work e mail is down . ususally i just shot pics on my work camera and just sent the tech ones on to toyota and sent mine over to birfield . but now when i send anything it does not remove it from my out box and just keeps resending it . our IT guy keeps putting me off as my job is not important enough to fix .
But i can send them from here ( home ) it just takes longer .

Evan,

Thanks for the offer and I will probably take you up on it in a few weeks. I am doing disc brakes and front axle "rebuild" now and then once that is done I think I will move to the interior to include the column, wiring harness, dash, and re-arching the roof supports.

Stay tuned,

Brian
