Ok, as some of you know the story already...

Toyota has offered to cover parts. :)

Thank you Mr. T!

However Bayridge Toyota in Brooklyn claims 10 hours labor at the cost of $850...

Keene Toyota quoted me $200 plust $25 for fluids.

Do they work that much faster in New Hampster? Or am I getting the driveshaft?

I think they are poking you with a driveshaft. R&R the rear should be about 4 hours or so. They might be quoting the price for R&R the ring and pinion, but I doubt they would do that. They will replace the whole diff. Make sure you get the old one if you can.

I think your other issue was that they started with a busted transfercase as a diagnosis and then discovered that was not broken. Then they moved to the diff. I still don't see the rear breaking that easily unless you were really homping it.

I broke a rear 100 axle shaft with 39's and the ring and pinion still held.

Keene claims it is a bearing in the rear.

I'm going to shop around a bit.

I am trying to figure out what toyota did and did not cover. Did they pay for the parts, front diff and transfer case or are they paying for just the rear diff? Or all of the above?

Can you go to an independent specialty shop or does it have to be a toyota dealership?

a friends father has his own transmisison/diff shop. Hes going on a hunting trip tommorrow for a week or so, but the guys are still at his shop. hes been working on trans/diffs for 30+ years, maybe he can help you out? His shop is in westchester...i dont know what the labor rate is though.

Hey Mac, check this out, the retail price for the rear differential for either the diff-lock or non-diff-lock carrier is the SAME ($1444)! There's a chance you can hook up the OEM diff lock with existing factory wiring. Would likely need some donor parts though.

Take a look at OEM locker retrofit on an 80.

The MASTER SEARCH ENGINE (aka HOSER) strikes again!

Haha, okay, enough! It was just an idea. Mac could be the only one out here with ATRAC and OEM diff locks.

Are you sure its the rear diff? Since they put used transfer case, its possible the transfer case is the one that make noise. My transfer case used to make whining noise but its gone after I changed the fluid with redline gear oil.

Did you do deep water crossing? Your rear diff might be full of water also.
