I've done a search and found nothing on remove or replace front axles. Has no one had to do this yet?

My boots are torn and slopping grease. It's a matter of time before the joints go bad. Is there a manual I can look up to help with the removal/replacement?

How about an upgrade?

Thanks in advance,
Matt

No one has had to replace an axle because of a torn boot or to make an upgrade?

Awww c'mon !

I'm about to do mine, but haven't yet. Toyota120 has a few write ups on it, doesn't seem too difficult. Still trying to find a way to keep OEM at almost triple the price.

Yes, OEM are over $300 per side, compared to under $100 for some after markets. Toyota120.com - its a forum specifically for 120 series (4runner, fj cruiser and gx) they have a write up for axle replacements along with a lot of 4runner specific info.

Toyota sells a boot kit, or you can get RCA boots. Not horrible to R&R a cv if you have basic mechanical skill.

I have replaced mine, OEM Toyota all the way. RCA also makes upgrades, but they are spendy (2k)

I'm not terribly concerned with the mechanics of a remove and replace. I just got back to work and would have much rather banked the money. That and it's well over a 100* here. I would rather work in the rain!

Just visited the 120 site. The last time I visited was the end of July and I remember why, not very busy. Didn't have to do a search, just scrolled down.

Thinking of getting replacement Tundra boots for an increase in mobility. That's why mine tore.

Anyone use the Tundra boots here? Is the shaft diameter the same for a decent fit?

No, there isn't a lot of traffic there. It is a good place to find information specific to 4runners though.

I just got mine out of the dealership, they said any set they've replaced boots on comes back within a year, so I am likely just going to wait a little longer and get the OEM replacements. I would hate to have to do it twice, not a fun job. You might have better luck with the different boots, I don't know any one who has them so I can't say how they would hold up. Good luck.

yeah, the aftermarket boot material is a much softer and pliable rubber material, unlike the OEM stuff. I'm sure an errant stick would make mince meat out of one of those before the OEM boot broke a sweat.

I just check those out and they seem pretty cool, but that is some serious coinage! Maybe if they came with a lifetime guarantee it would be worth it.

If I could afford it those would be awesome!

But I'm poor.

The OEM axles are the same left or right side and for the price I could carry two extra.

I bought OEM replacement boots. Just pulled the bearings and the power went out. Not working with a headlamp. Must be time for icecream!

For anyone thinking about doing this job don't hesitate. Easy. Easier if you just buy a replacement axle and swap it out.

You can also get silicone heavy duty boots from rcv, very cool

When I bought the replacement boot kit from Toyota there were extra bands. Kinda gave you a choice of what to work with.

I like the ridged aftermarket bands better, they are worm drive screws vs clips so they can get tighter.
