Quick question/discussion - Have been reading through the threads on replacing the exhaust system. Over the past few weeks I have spent hours under my rig cleaning up all the rust and repainting the frame, replacing parts, etc. One thing I see as a future problem is my exhaust system. Everything from the headers back is pretty rusty. I am going to eventually need to replace everything. I have been thinking more and more about the DT headers for when I do. But everything else from there back will need to be replaced as well. In the classified section a guy has a Cat back system for sell. Questions:

  1. Does that mean from the CAT on back? or does that include the CAT's? I am assuming the CAT's on back and I would still need to order new Cats from Beno/Cdan. Is that right?
  2. Would a borla system like this be a good option for the DT headers?
  3. I saw Loud mention that there may be conflicts with the Slee belly plate and the Borla CAT back system. I am running the BOIR belly plate. Can some one help me understand if there is a clearance issue here?

I know a lot of people have been going with the Magnaflow stuff lately. But a complete bolt on solution is attractive to me and the added rumble is a bonus but not a driving factor for the Borla or others for more throaty sound.... Thanks!

Although I don't know if the Borla system will conflict with your skid plates, I can attest that Borla makes top notch exhausts sytems.

A "Cat back" system does not include the cats.

I had a Borla system on a Jeep JK four years ago. It was a very nice system, pricey, but nice. It had as much of a rumble as you could get out a 3.8L V6 minivan engine. ;) If I had to rate them on loudness, I'd say they are a little more on the conservative side (read that...a little quieter) compared to other exhaust systems/mufflers.

I would not buy a "new" Borla system were I to do it over again. There's a local guy where I live who does top notch work for very reasonable prices. And, here in AZ, stainless tubing isn't a must as it is in other parts of the country where rust is prevalent.

Jardine / Doug Thorley, the people who made the Headers are going to make a Stainless cat back that fits our rigs. I am working on pulling something together, but I haven't had the time to start the thread yet. Just an FYI.

Who's going to dyno this one ? Sometimes you lose performance with exhaust systems.

If they make it too large of a diameter, I agree about loosing performance. Dunno if there is a local 4wd dyno near by. If so, maybe I will try to lead that charge. Still gotta start the GB thread for the exhaust and get that ball rolling. Super busy right now. :bang:

If you have a Toyota dealer install another stock exhaust system they will cover the exhaust with a lifetime warranty on parts and labor. I thought that was a pretty good deal. I think I'm going to go for it in another year or so. Up here in the rust belt I think it will payoff huge in the long run.

Cool, good to know. Yup that's (rust) why we are looking at having a second stainless option made available. Plus it will cost less than the Mr. T equivilent. Have you seen the y pipe in the factory system? Poor design, the most restrictive part of the entire exhaust, by far.

That would be great if it is in the price point they have for the Tacoma. Do you know if they are planning to design this so it will work with or with out the belly plate and will the rear tuck up in more for those of us with after market rear bumpers? Or will it just follow the factory exhaust?

Also, can anyone confirm if the Borla system does or does not conflict with our aftermarket belly plate. I am trying to plan for either having to have a custom system made to work or an aftermarket bolt on solution and a cost associated with it. Thanks!

They will design whatever there is demand for. My truck is going to be used as the model. I don't currently have the belly plate or aftermarket rear bumper. I will have to discuss with Jamie and Nick at DT. Maybe we can have them design a universal from cats back to the rear axle then two options from there back? one for stock and one routed higher setup for different rear setups?

Idea's?

Hmmm.... Well, obviously the belly plate is the biggest concern of mine. Tucked up more in the rear would be nice since I along with others are banging up our existing tail pipe because it sits lower, but not a deal breaker. Maybe we can find someone more local that has a belly plate and willing to let them look at it for fitting with or without a belly plate. Worse case, I could drive my belly plate up there and leave it for a little while for test fitting if needed.

I wish some one could help with the potential conflicts with a belly plate though. I was just laying under there and I dont see why there would be. The connection to the Cats is higher than the transfer case and there is room with the existing system....hmmm.

They are not THAT far away from La Jolla. They are right at the 15 and 91. If you come up to let them measure etc. we can take a run up either Harding Truck trail or Indian Truck trail to the Santiago Peak...

No, Not that far. What is the timing? I have the underside torn apart right now basically rebuilding everything on the underside and still need to get the Torque Converter replaced before I trust it off road. I have never run either of those trails and would love to!

Probably a month away, both on the kit design and for the trails.

So besides my leaky manifolds (which close up after 5 minutes of driving and stay shut until I shut it off again) I want to get a little bit more tone out. I have $125 to spend (with shipping). What would you guys recommend, I've heard the borla muffler and it's not loud enough, but I don't mind noise, just not a racket. My truck right now sounds good under 3.5K but anything above that it just sounds like high pressure air leaving a small tube.... short of going to a full 2.5" exhuast what are my options to give it tone at full throttle without sounding like garbage on the top end of the tach? I have stock everything right now minus the resonator and deck plate (which sounds awesome inside and outside, but the exhaust ruins everything past 3.5K RPM)

Borla SLP?
Magnaflow 24"?
Flowmaster 40's (probably a bit to loud)?
Remove the muffler and go redneck :hillbilly:

RedNeck FTW!

Send me the system - I'll dyno it.

We may be able to work that out. I'll keep you in the loop.

another question, the purpose of starting this thread was for me to better understand the aftermarket parts and cost. My current system does not have any spots rusted through YET. But looking at everything, I know as soon as I start replacing one part it will trigger a chain of replacing everything from the engine back. All of the different flanges are in pretty bad shape and none of the bolts and nuts will come apart without breaking. I see temp exhaust paint out there. Has any one taken a pretty rusted exhaust, wire brushed it and painted it? Looking to make it last longer if possible. No job and mods budget blown this year....

You can disco the system from the cat back, clean it up and paint it no problem. I'll bet youre flanges are all fine. You're a cali guy not in the rust belt so I wouldnt worry too much. Most futz with exhaust systems cause they want to hear the motor. If your not in that camp then just refresh what you have.
