replacing exhaust system

You can disco the system from the cat back, clean it up and paint it no problem. I'll bet youre flanges are all fine. You're a cali guy not in the rust belt so I wouldnt worry too much. Most futz with exhaust systems cause they want to hear the motor. If your not in that camp then just refresh what you have.

I wish that were the case. A few years back I had to forge through some salt water at SnT. I didnt pressure spray the underside after. Fast forward to this spring when I got under there to start installing a new CV and I was completely depressed how bad things had started rusting. Lets say I have learned a lot since those days...

I worked in the engine rooms on Navy ships back in the day. So, I have seen some poor flanges from rust. Some of the bolts at the flanges have no threads left and I am getting rust flakes that are 1/16" thick coming off the flanges.... they might be able to be reused, but at some point things are going to need to be replaced.

I am thinking about trying this:

I am just a little nervous about those flanges and bolts/nuts....

I have a 2001 lx470 took it into a Toyota dealership for oil change and they said I need to replace entire exhaust system and manifold due to rust and corrosion. They quoted me at $1930 including 9 hours of labor. This seems pretty high to, this is a dealership that has been very fair and honest in the past but this just seems too high.

Also thinking about putting on an aftermarket stainless system any recommendations?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Do you have exhaust leaks, holes in the pipes or other symptoms of an entirely jacked up exhaust system? If not, don't pay money to have the dealership "fix" it. Sounds like an overzealous service writer to me, but I can't be sure without seeing it.

As a point of reference, my truck lived its life in Chicago for 130k+ miles before finding its way to me in Denver, and I'm not even close to needing the exhaust replaced. They use some pretty decent stainless on these things IMO. At the very least, go to an indy exhaust shop and get a second opinion.

8 hours and $1000 is probably the manifolds. Buy some headers and go to an indy shop for exhaust work.

@TheFuzz, they said that the right side exhaust manifold is leaking. I have no way to know for sure, and that the muffler is about to come off, which is weird because they had it a month ago for normal service and said everything looked great. I looked under the truck and it does look pretty rusted/corroded. Haven't lost any gas mileage or power.

@RobRed, they told me it would take 9 hours for the manifold and exhaust total. Parts total for manifold and exhaust was $831.54. I didn't realize the manifold would take so long, a couple of my buddies said it shouldn't take more than a couple hours. Is it that tough to do on the LX?

Thanks again for the info and help.

It's an 8 hour job to do the manifolds on the 100. 12-14 hours if you take a lot of time and it's your first time. Do a search on DT header installs for more install details.

The manifolds crack (passenger side in particular) all the time on these trucks, it's a very well known problem. Replacing them DT headers is the best thing you could do and it improves the drivability.

Sounds like the muffler may be possibly bad and I would go to an independent exhaust shop to verify. If your exhaust is allegedly bad what about the cats?
