Has anyone done a complete carpet replacement? I just bought a 97 and it smelled fine for a while (till the shampoo scent wore off, I guess), but now the odor from the PO is too much. Looking to buy the molded set from SOR (343-800-OAK) and wanted to know what you guys thought. Pain in the a#$? Or easy. Any tips?

BTW, this is the best message board I have ever seen. I've enjoyed the reading, even the stuff that I don't understand.

Thanks.

nicholas,
we dont really understand it either.
we just pretend that we do.
I would recomment that you try one more thing first. call your local staelership and ask to talk to the used sales manager, tell him you would like to have a car de stunk. ask him who he uses to de stink smokers trade in cars. ususally it is a guy who will drive around and do this for a living. other than that it is probably not in the carpe but in the jute backing under the carpet. I would pull your carpet up and see what condition that is in as it is easily sourced form a carpet supply house.

Phaedrus - thanks for the tip. I'll make the call to see if I can make the stink go away.

You might also think about pulling the carpets and taking them to the car wash. Pull into a do-it-yourself bay, hang the carpets from the floor-mat clips and have at it with high pressure soap followed by rinse.

If this no worky, think about what you want this truck to be. There are lots of things you can do like placing sound deadening material under new carpets, using bed liner in part of the truck etc.

Good luck, your problem reminds me of a Seinfeld episode!

Cool. Part of my desire to replace is also that the PO burned (battery acid?) a few large spots into the carpet -- behind the driver's seat and in the cargo area. Not big deals, but eyesores.

What have you used for sound deadening?

The best sound deadening material is Dyno-mat!! Get the big pack (weighs like 80lbs!!) should be enough to do your floors, with double layers around noisy areas like trans hump!! You can also get a couple of packs and double or tripple layer it depending on how quiet you want it!! There are a couple different levels you can get also. Make shure you get the heaviest duty stuff, wieghs more, but hey we drive cruisers!!

I have used nothing, but it doesn't work too well. Steve Laird (a guy in my club) is experimenting with an inexpensive roofing material. It comes in rolls (about $16 per roll) and is silver on one side and "sticky" foam on the other. He met a guy who did a 60 series with this stuff and Steve swore the doors shut with the Thud of a new Lexus!

there were some guys on the 3FE list about a moth agoa going off on soundproofing with this stuff. apparently available at roofing supply houses and fairly inexpensive.
I still say pull hte carpet and remove the jute. replace the jute with more jute or the deadening panels as mentioned.

2 cents here: I want the noise. lets me know what is up as I drive.

Removal of carpet and replacing the under material is key.

Look at home carpet...the top can be clean, the padding can be rotten and stinking.

jute from one vehicle can suck up the whole damn gulf of mexico and turn into a sour moldy mess. - replace just it or the whole carpet thing, especially if you're looking to fix those cosmetic items as well. i have the same damn battery acid burn in the rear cargo area of my 62, and am looking at replacing my carpet. i will probably durabak the interior floor before i put the new carpet in.

dave makes good points about de-stinking your car. all dealers have a de-stink dude to call, most will use machines to hook up to your vehicle using ozone or others chemicals to neutralize any odors.

if your vehicle has an a/c filter change that, too. the newer 100's have these, makes a big diff if it's been a stinky car, esp smoke odors. lastly, throw a couple sheets of "bounce" fabric softener sheets under the front seats

good luck!
