Where and what is a good one to buy. not looking for a $600 cat-back system. Just an OEM replacement type. Is Dealer the best bet or do NAPA/Autozone carry a decent product? Any vendors on the board that have something?

It doesn't need to be made out of material that has a half life. Just something that will get me another 10 years or so. Mines starting to grow some holes and get a little thin underneath.

I can't give you a great answer to your question, but I just swapped mine out for a walker ss and have a few comments about it. First it doesn't use the same tailpipe flange as stock. It requires you to slide a straight pipe into the exhaust opening and uses a standard muffler clamp. I actually ended up needing a short extension to reach the tailpipe. That brings me to the next point. The muffler is significantly smaller than stock in nearly every dimension, though probably good for off road, it just doesn't fit the same. Finally, the hangers needed tweaked quite a bit. Because of the different muffler size, I needed to bend them to the side and up nearly 2 inches to keep the muffler away from anything it could rattle against. I managed to only get about 3/4 of an inch clearance above the muffler for clearance. That said it only cost me around $70 from rock auto after rebates so all in all it was worth the effort. It's quiet and looked like it was built solid. At least that's one point of reference for you. Good luck.

An OEM muffler is about $375 (with discount) for just the part. Fair warning, though; once you get into the exhaust system you may find other things rusted out and/or broken in disassembly. Here are the OEM part numbers for everything from the rear of the converters on back, including pipes, gaskets, nuts, bolts, and rubber hangers for a 2004 Land Cruiser. In parentheses are how many of each part are needed if more than one. The total discounted price was $898.

I paid about 140 (parts and labor) for a non oem one from a local muffler shop. Original was getting very loud and annoying - this new one returned the truck to new sounding.

Ok. Thanks guys. Don't want anything like a flow master or magma flow. I had a mustang with those and the drone at cruising speed sucked. Quiet is good

Well aware I'll break just about everything I try to disconnect. Might be worth the 150-200 to just drop it off at a muffler shop and let them have at it. Didn't realize the OEM was that much coon

Went to a local muffler shop today. 380 for a new one installed. Not a genuine Toyota but has a lifetime warranty. A bit more than I wanted to spend but sounds good (quiet) and fits well.

I think about $200 at rock auto. Walker brand lasted me 3.5 years in the rust belt.

Just be careful with 'the muffler shop'. There must be some good ones, but most of them use rubbish tube stock, cut where they feel like it, and weld everything. If you want an exhaust system that won't rust out in a year and that can be removed in sections as Mr T originally built it then remove the failed stock muffler and replace with same or at least an equivalent replacement.
