Replacement Center Console For The 60?

Just my opinion but all locks just need to be drilled to be defeated. Locking the trucks doors, locking the console can be defeated with a simple portable drill. A lock stops the guy that jumps in to rummage but a determined thief with tools will take what they want w/o much effort.

Yes the console from Quadratec does lock.

Yes it locks, but I'm thinking I could break into it even without tools. Like the door locks, they are only there as a deterrent. I'm fine with that. I think the Qtec console looks much better and is cheaper. A Tuffy is certainly more secure, but it won't stop a determined criminal. Luckily, it probably will stop a crackhead armed with only a screwdriver or spark plug - so that will take out a large percentage of potential thieves. But if they want it, they'll get it.

Secret comportment? I would like to know about this as well. Or are you referring to the area underneath the cupholders?

I agree with Micah and did the same thing. Great replacement, perfect height and good capacity. I'm not sure why but I didn't need any additional bracket, just drilled the holes and bolted it in.

If you have money to burn Tuffy would be the way to go.

I like the way this looks too, and the price is right. The height feels good as an arm rest? Same height as the door arm rest?

hmm. i think im gonna try making on of these when i get some spare time at work. im not really concerned about the security aspect of it, i just dont like the stock one and the lack of useable cupholders. hmm, aluminum or stainless steel...

Yes the height is great for an arm rest. As for the secret compartment there is a good amount of space underneath the cup holders that you could defiantly put things in it and use it as extra space. The inside main compartment really is big and seem huge after you go from the stock one. I have mine loaded with cds and all sorts of junk and the 4 cell mag-light fits in the top really nice. The people that ride with me also say that is nice having cup holders in the back seat also.

And MrZero I have the black vinyl and I am pretty sure that is what everyone else has.

I was wondering about the quality and materials of the quadratech. It looks to be covered in vinyl? What is the box made of? How well constructed is it? Can someone comment?

Here is the Picture of the inside of the console and also a pic of the space under the cup holder. Like I said it has alot of room which is really nice.

LoneRanger: The materials to be honest are not the kind that you would find on a Tuffy. Yes it is vinyl, and the side are just partical board but honestly it feels plenty strong. I even have had to remove one of the bracings on the inside so that I could get the switches to fit up in the front and it still feel fine.

It is covered in vinyl and is pretty thin fiberboard underneath that. The construction is good for the price but nothing I'd jump up and down on or use for weight bearing. I have my fire extinguisher & mag light mounted to mine w/o any issues. The top hinges aren't all that strong and the lock is a simple hook. This is a good functional unit for storage which is what it's made for, it's not built to protect your valuables. The top cushion is holding up well and the height is great for an arm rest.

BTW - I think i have the grey denim and it matches pretty well with the grey interior on my 87 FJ60. Certainly not a Tuffy substitute, but 100x better than stock. Great armrest too.

Wow! Certainly a lot to think about when considering a replacement console for the 60.

It appears what it all comes down to is “no-frills” usable storage vs. some degree of security. Initially, I wanted to go with the Quadratech console because it gave me the extra storage I needed, was fairly inexpensive, and had that quasi-stock look to it. However, I got to thinking about the times I’ve gone to the beach or to the river and I’ve left my wallet, cell and I-Pod locked up in my 60 (Yes, I know, I shouldn’t do that, but its either that or hiding those items I a zip lock bag under the towel or the ice chest.) and I decided that either the Tuffy or the CCOT console would better serve my needs. However, if Amber00Dak fabricates a locking console in stainless with cup holders fore and aft, I’d be willing to go that route!

if you want security, it is hard to beat a Tuffy.
I don't know what you keep in the car, but an iPod, pda, cellphone.... whatever.... is going to cost as much as the difference between the Tuffy and the CCOT console.

This isn't meant to bash the CCOT console, it might be plenty good and strong, I've never seen one. But I do know a guy with a Tuffy in his 40. He lost the keys and had to break in. Using power tools, in his garage, it took him 15 minutes to break into his Tuffy. Granted- he was trying to keep from destroying it entirely- but they really aren't easy to break into.

And the finish on them is good too.

I just put a CCOT center console in my 60 for a recent trip to Baja. Security was the main reason for the install...

Packed the rig and was in Ensenada when I grabbed the "hoop" on the box and gave it a tug. Didn't realize it was locked...but it came right open!!!

Lock hardware is a joke. I had to remove the "hoop" as it was an easy lever. Maybe now someone with have to break a finger nail to get it open!!!

If someone steels your crap you at least know they own or owned a 60 at one time or read this post.

Thanks for the hot tip Cruiser Dan. (I never thought of putting my valuables there before, but it’s definitely a spot you’d need to know about in order to find.) I’m on the list to purchase one of the tailgate storage set-ups for the 60 posted by kevinmrowland, so once I get that in, I’ll be able to put any odd-sized valuables there. Unfortunately, when my wife or my daughter uses my 60, they are probably not going to go through the “hassle” of putting their valuables in the rear jack compartment, (I can just hear it now: “You expect me to put my new purse in that dirty storage compartment?”) so I’m still going to go with as secure a center console as I can. In light of the posts I’ve seen (and again, thank you all for your input), it’s looking more and more that from a security perspective, the Tuffy console is the way to go.

I guess the bottom line is that other than locking your vehicle up in the garage patrolled by Bullmastiffs, keeping your valuables safe inside of your 60 is really dependent on being vigilant, parking in high traffic, semi-secured areas, and not drawing attention to yourself. All in all, I will probably be going with the Tuffy after all. With security as the priority, anything short of the Tuffy doesn’t seem to hold up.

I think the real bottom line is that you should be happy you have any valuables left after buying a Tuffy!
