I replaced my fan clutch on my 100 but it still has a lot of noise at start up and until 2nd gear.the replacement clutch was from autozone (torcflow) I believe ..I generally use Toyota replacement parts but I was in a pinch and this one was handy so anyways, someone told me the noise should resolve after the clutch brakes in?? The fan moves easy to the touch it's not real stiff.. Any help would be greatly appreciated ...thanks

what kind of noise. You should expect the fan clutch to engage at startup hearing a roar almost. This is because the fluid drains while to vehicle is off, it slows down fairly fast once it gets spinning and the engages again based on temperature

If you still have the stock fan, change out the fluid with 10,000 CST. You can get it at a remote control shop and put it back on. That fluid will improve the performance of the fan

my old fan locked in the on position..someone told be that if the fan lock on its no good so i tossed it there where stuff hanging out of the bottom so thought it was true?

Yeah, it just seems more fan noise for longer than I remember with the stock fan clutch

Well, what made you change out the stock clutch? Was it running hot? If so, the stock one probably wasn't making enough noise. However, I've never had good luck with aftermarket fan clutches. So if you think it is not working correctly, either test it out or replace with OEM. Even here in AZ, I haven't found it necessary to run the heavier fluid like I did in my 80.

My stock clutch had stuck in the on position and I was told that it was no good plus there was some stuff hanging out of the bottom of it ..talking about loud that was really loud!!...so I replaced it

It was a fan noise that the aftermarket cheapo clutch fan was making ..its hard to explain its a fan noise that starts if your truck gets hot or starts over heating .. The fan clutch didn't stay on it and it worked it just was not as quiet as a oem is

Thanks! So, if I understand the thread correctly, you changed your original fan because it was locked "on" not for any other reasons, sounds, etc.

So, when the fan operates normally, if the engine is running and the temps are not too hot, the fan will stop spinning? When the engine starts getting too warm, it will turn on and spin? I think mine always spins.... But, have never paid much attention to be honest. Also, if it is locked "on", what is the harm?

Well if that your problem and you change your fan clutch you should get better gas mileage and the sound of serenity " no sound":)

Mxn,
It always spins, just not always with full force (lock up).
When the air across the fan clutch is cool it disengauges, when the air and fan clutch heat up it locks up to pull more air through the radiator. Due to some drag it always causes the fan to spin.

The basic test is for a cool engine you should be able to spin the fan easily by hand (serpentine doesn't move) with the engine off. If the engine/radiator/fan clutch are hot then it should be hard to spin the fan.
