Hi,

My 88 FJ62 land cruiser has a slipping problem in the transmission. It moves forward when in drive but will slip for a few seconds and then catches itself. It does the same thing in reverse.
Is it possible that the whole transmission needs to be replaced or just the torque converter? Which one is more cost effective?

Is it something simpler than changing the transmission like a low fluid level?

Any information would be helpful.

In most cases, the fault is in the transmission. The torque converter (TC) has very few parts which go bad. The one-way clutch (sprag gear) in the stator can fail if the lubrication is low or the stators bearings which support it's rotation fail.

The lock-up, which is a clutch type device wears down over time total miles, can loose it's material. You realize this once the tranny overheats.

Check the fluid with the engine/transmission at operating temp and while running, first. If the fluid is okay then you may just need to adjust the kickdown cable.
