Hi guys....

I am looking for some help in replacing the existing subwoofer in my LX450, I believe it is a 4" woofer it sits as many of you know in the center console.

I searched but have not found any info on the modification to the center console, or even details about the installation.

If u have any experience pls let me know.

I think that this is the optimum place to put the new sub, I will be trying to fit a 8" where the CD changer currently sits, with the sub firing down. I want to install the amp under the Passenger seat but am unsure of the amount of room I will have to play with.

Please share you thoughts.

BCLX450,

I have not seen anyone else do this on this board, but I have looked at this myself. With the changer removed, there should be enough room for an 8". Two JL 6w0's would probably fit very easily too. These little buggers are somewhat impressive for their size. Almost 3 years ago I built a fiberglass enclosure to fit 4 of these 6w0's sealed in the stock sub location of my mkiv supra. They can handle 125 watts of clean power each. 4 of them move about as much air as an average 12" and can fit in very tight spaces. I have thought of making my own console out of 3/4" mdf to try and take advantage of the gap between the rear of the console and the drivers seat. I think a downfiring 10w1v2 could possibly fit in that spot and only take up a little more floorspace. You might even be able to work out a properly positioned armrest for the driver in the process. Even though the 80 is a difficult vehicle to put a hidden subwoofer in, there are more possibilities than people think. I wish I had the time to work on some of the ideas I have.

BTW, good luck fitting an amp under the passenger seat. I remember thinking "No way". Don't remember why, but it must be tight with a power seat motor under there. Maybe a small class D would fit. There's a lot of space behind the large plastic sidepanels by the 3rd row. Especially on the passenger side. Search for what others have done and you'll find some good ideas for hiding your amp.

what wattage are you looking to run? Do you really think your going to fit a 8in in the center consol?

heres what i see wrong with your idea, athough cool, problems. one if you plan to run a fair amount of watts say (200) and up your going to have trouble fitting a 8 inch in that space with enough space for the sub to run smoothly, subs need air behind them for them to work properly. It sux because most of us want to run subs with out loosing storage space but it doesnt work. 2nd mounting the amp under the seat wont fit. theres almost no room under the seats for anything let alon an amp. 3rd im not sure i would mount an amp on the floor anywhere in the lx as on long trips the floor get quite hot (amps need cool air) Your best bet is stick with the set up every one else runs. mount the amp in the right rear pannel and the sub in a seperate box that is removable. If you want to run a sub on the factory head unit in the lx but a line converter and take out the small centerconsole sub. wire the line converter into the old sub wiring (2 wires) this converts that signal to rca and then u can plug it into the new amp. This will also allow you to adjust the bass with the bass knob on your head unit. ou have a cool idea just doesnt look like its worth it

I've only looked under the passenger seat once, and I remember seeing what I believe is the rear floor heater fan. If so, that wouldn't be a good place to put something that needs cool air across the heat sink.

how about laying a powered bazzoka sub in there?

Center console sub.

I attempted a center console sub with a single 10 or two 6.5's. I could only come up with .3 cu ft in a wooden enclosure. With fiberglass you could probably come up with more but either way would involve removing your entire center. You could extend it towards the center seat some but you would be limiting your floor space.

.3 cu ft. is not much in terms of anything bigger than an 8" sub. A single 8 up front could sound very nice but it would be an immense amount of work. A shop would charge on the order of $250 - 500 depending on complexity desired for this type of project in my experience.

I ended up using the center console to house a 12 disc changer which would not fit anywhere else either due to the bulk.

I have a 2 channel amp under the drivers side seat but mine are manuals. I had a small 4 channel under there but it stuck out the back a bit and even with an ABS cover it received some abuse.

Not much room in an LC for a stereo system.

save a $100 and buy it off ebay

Well here we go guys.....

Sorry for wasting your time..... I ended up taking the easy way out, and I ended buying the
APX640.4 M.S.R.P. $449.95 CDN Clarion Amp
http://www.clarioncanada.com/en/products/amplifiers/APX640.4.html
and then mounting 2 10" subs in the rear carge area.

I just dont have the time to take aprt the complete console and fiberglass etc. but I have worked out the complete specs to do 2 8" in the LX centre console with 1 pointing down and one facing forward replacing the stock sub.

The downward sub will replace the CDchanger and the second an off angle box housing the 8 facing forward. I just cannot be bothered with it right now.

I am going to be putting the 2 10" in the tailgate at a later date though when I replace the existing stock speakers in the fronts and side doors.
